What a SPAN smart panel is

A SPAN Panel is a smart electrical panel that takes the place of your existing breaker panel. It still does the basic job every panel does: it brings power in from the utility, splits it into circuits, and shuts a circuit off when something goes wrong. The difference is what happens on top of that. Every circuit in a SPAN Panel is measured in real time and can be switched on or off from the SPAN Home app, whether you’re in the kitchen or out of town.

You can see that the pool pump has been running all night, that the garage freezer stopped drawing power, or that the AC is the reason your bill jumped in August. When a storm takes the grid down, you decide which circuits matter most instead of guessing.

SPAN makes several panel models, with 16 to 48 controllable circuits. Most homes get a model with a built-in main breaker that replaces the existing main panel, and SPAN’s main-lug models are designed to work as subpanels. Every model is rated for indoor or outdoor installation. We recommend a model only after we’ve looked at your current panel, your service size and what you plan to add over the next few years. Some larger homes with a lot of circuits or a service bigger than 200 amps may need more than one panel, and we’ll tell you up front if yours is one of them.

Why Pinellas homeowners choose SPAN

Know where your power goes

Live and historical use for each circuit, so you can spot the appliance, pump or space heater that’s quietly running up your Duke Energy or TECO bill.

Control circuits from anywhere

Switch a circuit off from the app: the water heater while you’re traveling, the outlet you’re not sure you unplugged, or a rental unit between tenants.

Ride out outages smarter

Paired with a compatible home battery, you choose which circuits stay on during an outage so backup power goes to the fridge, lights and medical equipment first.

Add big loads without guessing

SPAN PowerUp™ load management can slow or pause EV charging so your total stays within your service rating. In some homes that avoids or delays a service upgrade.

A new main panel, done right

Replacing an old, full or problem panel (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, rusted outdoor boxes) with SPAN fixes the safety issue and adds the smart features in one job.

Gets better over time

SPAN adds features through software updates, so the panel you install today isn’t frozen in place the way a standard breaker panel is.

Every panel we install, SPAN included, comes with whole-house surge protection. In a part of Florida that sees as much lightning as Pinellas does, that matters for the electronics in your smart panel and everything plugged in downstream of it.

Is a SPAN Panel right for your home?

SPAN is a great fit for a lot of homes, but not every home. Here’s how we decide.

SPAN usually makes sense if you:

  • Need to replace your panel anyway (it’s full, outdated, damaged, or flagged by your insurance company) and want more than a standard breaker box
  • Drive an EV now or plan to soon, and want charging managed around the rest of the house
  • Have or plan a home battery and want backup power to go to the circuits you choose
  • Want to understand and cut energy use: pool equipment, older AC systems, workshops or rental units
  • Are adding big loads (a heat pump, induction range, EV charger or addition) and want to know if you can do it without a bigger utility service

A standard panel may be the better buy if you simply need a safe, reliable replacement and don’t care about monitoring or remote control. In that case our Good (ABB) or Best (Siemens) panel options cost less and do the job well. We’ll lay out both options side by side and let you decide.

SPAN vs. a standard panel upgrade vs. a service upgrade

These three get mixed up, and they solve different problems.

Best forHomes adding EVs, batteries or big loads, and owners who want controlStraight safety replacements on a budgetHomes that truly need more amps, confirmed by a load calculation

The only honest way to choose is a load calculation: we add up what your home actually draws and what you plan to add. Sometimes SPAN’s load management lets you skip a service upgrade; sometimes your home really does need the extra capacity, and SPAN goes in as part of that upgrade. Either way, you’ll see the math.

SPAN + EV chargers

A Level 2 EV charger is often the single biggest load in a house, and it tends to run in the evening, right when the AC, dryer and oven are also on. On an older 100- or 150-amp service, that’s how people end up being told they need a costly service upgrade.

SPAN watches your total load in real time and can slow or pause EV charging when the house needs the capacity, then resume when it doesn’t. SPAN also makes its own Level 2 charger, SPAN Drive. It works only with a SPAN Panel, charges at up to 48 amps, works with any EV that uses a J1772 connector, and uses the panel’s live load data to charge as fast as your home’s spare capacity allows. You can also schedule charging for off-peak hours in the app, and charging from excess solar is available on the SPAN Panel MAIN 32 today, with other models to follow through software updates. Whether load management is enough for your home depends on your service size and loads, so we run a load calculation before recommending anything. See our EV charger installation page for charger options, condo and business installs.

SPAN + generators

Hurricane season is the reason most Pinellas homeowners ask about backup power. A permanent standby generator can be used with a SPAN Panel, with limits SPAN spells out. The generator has to connect ahead of the SPAN Panel through an automatic or manual transfer switch. A portable-generator inlet with an interlock kit can’t be installed in a SPAN Panel itself.

With a generator and no battery, SPAN doesn’t communicate with the generator and won’t shed or prioritize circuits automatically. During an outage you switch off non-essential circuits in the SPAN Home app yourself, which still beats a trip to the panel in the rain. Automatic backup priorities need a compatible home battery. When a generator is part of a compatible battery system, the battery runs the outage and calls on the generator when it’s needed. We’ll tell you which setup fits your home, and our generator installation & hookups team can plan the generator and the SPAN Panel together.

SPAN works with your existing solar and batteries

This is where SPAN shines, and it’s what most of our SPAN customers have: a home with solar panels and a battery backup system. On its own, a battery backs up a fixed set of circuits chosen on install day. Paired with SPAN, you can change those priorities in the app at any time, see roughly how much backup time is left, and let SPAN switch off lower-priority loads so the battery isn’t overloaded or drained early. Your solar production and battery level show up in the same app.

SPAN works with a home’s existing solar and battery backup system when the battery is on SPAN’s compatibility list. Per SPAN’s current product guide, Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH aPower work with every SPAN Panel model, and Tesla Powerwall 2, SolarEdge and Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10T work with the SPAN Panel MAIN 32 (Enphase requires SPAN’s Remote Meter Kit). SPAN says it extends battery life by 40% during an outage by prioritizing battery power where it’s needed most,* and its Backup Overload Protection (NEC 2023 Article 702.4 compliant) helps prevent brownouts and service calls for battery resets. We confirm your exact equipment before the install.

Don’t have solar or a battery yet? We can add solar, battery backup and energy monitoring through our licensed partner installers as one coordinated project. Our licensed partners install the solar and battery equipment, and we manage the project and handle the electrical work, including the SPAN Panel and the interconnection wiring. How we price a SPAN installation

We don’t quote SPAN over the phone, because two homes on the same street can need very different work. Instead, every SPAN job starts with an itemized quote after a site visit. You’ll see each part of the job as its own line, so you know exactly what you’re paying for and can compare it fairly.

What affects the price:

  • The SPAN model and how many circuits your home needs
  • Your current panel and service: its location, condition and size, and whether a service upgrade is needed at the same time
  • Code corrections: grounding and bonding fixes, or damaged wiring we find at the old panel
  • Permit and inspection with Pinellas County or your city’s building department
  • Add-ons such as an EV charger circuit, generator connection or battery integration
  • Network setup: SPAN uses your home Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection, so we look at where your router is

If a standard panel would serve you just as well, the quote will say so, and we’ll price both so you can compare.

Financing available

Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.

How a SPAN installation works, start to finish

  1. Site visit and load calculation. We look at your panel, meter, grounding and wiring, ask what you want to add (EV, battery, generator, addition), and run the numbers.
  2. Itemized quote. The SPAN model we recommend, any service or code work, permit fees and add-ons, each as its own line. If a standard panel fits better, you’ll see that option too.
  3. Permit. We pull the permit with Pinellas County or your city’s building department and, if the job involves the meter or service, coordinate with Duke Energy or TECO.
  4. Installation day. Most SPAN installs take about a day, similar to a standard panel replacement. Power is off for part of that time, and we’ll tell you when ahead of time.
  5. Commissioning. As a SPAN Authorized Installer, we commission the panel with SPAN’s installer tools, connect it to your network, and name and organize every circuit so the app makes sense.
  6. Inspection. We meet the building inspector so you don’t have to.
  7. App walkthrough. Before we leave, we show you how to read your usage, switch circuits and set backup priorities, and we’re a phone call away after that.

SPAN smart panel FAQ

Are you an authorized SPAN installer?

Yes. Keywest Lights & Electric is a SPAN Authorized Installer, authorized by SPAN to install and commission SPAN smart panels, and we’ve completed 20 SPAN installs. We handle the install, the permit, the inspection and the SPAN Home app setup.

Does a SPAN Panel replace my breaker panel?

Yes. SPAN installs in place of your existing main panel. It includes standard circuit breakers for protection plus the hardware that measures and controls each circuit.

How much does a SPAN Panel installation cost?

It depends on the SPAN model, your current panel and service, any code corrections, the permit and add-ons like an EV charger or battery. We give an itemized quote after a site visit, so you see every line before you decide.

How long does a SPAN installation take?

Most installs take about a day, similar to a standard panel replacement, with the power off for part of it. Jobs that include a service upgrade or extra circuits can take longer, and the permit and inspection add some calendar time.

Can SPAN help me avoid a service upgrade for an EV charger?

Sometimes. SPAN can slow or pause EV charging so your total load stays within your service rating. Whether that works for your home depends on a load calculation, which we do before recommending anything.

Does SPAN work with a generator?

Yes, with limits. A standby generator connects ahead of the SPAN Panel through a transfer switch, and a portable-generator interlock can’t go in the SPAN Panel. Without a compatible battery, SPAN won’t prioritize circuits automatically on generator power, so you turn off non-essential circuits in the app yourself. We’ll go over the right setup for your home.

Does SPAN work with my solar and home battery?

Usually, if the battery is on SPAN’s compatibility list. Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH aPower work with every SPAN model, and some Enphase, SolarEdge and older Powerwall systems work with specific models. With a compatible battery, you choose which circuits get backup power and can change it any time in the app. We check your equipment before the install.

Can you add solar or a battery if I don’t have them yet?

Yes. SPAN works with existing solar and batteries, and if you don’t have them yet, we can add solar, battery backup and energy monitoring through our licensed partner installers as one coordinated project. Our partners install the solar and battery equipment; we manage the project and handle the electrical work, including the SPAN Panel and interconnection wiring.

What happens if my internet goes down?

Your breakers keep protecting your circuits just like any panel. App monitoring, remote control and software updates need an internet connection. SPAN connects by Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet and switches to a cellular backup connection when one is available, but SPAN says not to rely on cellular as the main connection. We’ll explain how your system behaves offline during the walkthrough.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Financing is available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. You can check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.

What warranty comes with a SPAN installation?

SPAN backs its panels with a 10-year limited warranty (5 years on the SPAN Home Gateway) when installed by SPAN or a SPAN Authorized Installer. We add our own 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.

Is surge protection included?

Yes. Every panel we install, SPAN included, comes with whole-house surge protection.

Do you install SPAN outside Seminole?

Yes. We install SPAN Panels across Pinellas County — including Largo, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, East Lake and the beach communities — and across the wider Tampa Bay area. Live SPAN area pages also cover Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, Bradenton, Sarasota, Longboat Key & Lakewood Ranch, Carrollwood, Apollo Beach, Temple Terrace, Westchase, Town ‘n’ Country, Brandon, Riverview and South Tampa.
