What SPAN does, in plain terms

A SPAN Panel replaces your breaker panel (or the fuse box some Gulfport homes still have). Every circuit is measured and switchable in the SPAN Home app: you can see what the AC, the water heater or the EV charger is drawing, turn circuits off from anywhere, and get free over-the-air software updates. It uses standard 1-inch breakers and is NEMA 3R rated for indoor or outdoor installation, which matters in a town where many panels hang on an exterior wall.

Is SPAN a good fit for an older Gulfport home?

Gulfport’s median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS 2020–2024), the oldest of any city on our main service list, and many homes near Boca Ciega Bay are 1920s–50s cottages. That makes the honest answer “it depends on the service”:

  • 60-amp service or a fuse box. SPAN doesn’t add capacity. In these homes we usually recommend a service upgrade in Gulfport first, and SPAN can go in as the new panel on that upgraded service, so you’re only replacing the panel once.
  • 100- to 200-amp service. This is where SPAN shines. SPAN PowerUp™ can manage EV charging so the house stays within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ For a small cottage adding an EV or a heat pump, that can be the difference between a panel job and a much bigger project.
  • Renovated homes with solar and a battery. SPAN lets you choose which circuits get backup power during an outage, adjust those priorities as the outage goes on, and see how much backup time is left. SPAN says it extends battery life by 40% during an outage.*

Either way, we look at the grounding, the meter base and the wiring at the panel before we quote. Older Gulfport homes sometimes have ungrounded circuits or leftover knob-and-tube runs that should be addressed when the panel is replaced, and we’ll list that separately so you can decide.

Gulfport homes we see SPAN in

  • Cottages and bungalows in the waterfront district. Small footprints, exterior panels, and owners who want modern control without tearing up plaster. SPAN usually mounts where the old panel was.
  • Mid-century block homes away from the water. Original panels that are now full, often from brands insurers flag on a 4-point. If you’re replacing the panel anyway, SPAN adds monitoring and control in the bargain.
  • Waterfront homes on Boca Ciega Bay. Salt air corrodes breakers and enclosures quickly. SPAN’s NEMA 3R rating helps outdoors, and we plan corrosion-aware fittings. Many of these homes also have dock and boat-lift circuits you’ll be able to see and switch off from the app.
  • Homes with golf carts and LSVs. Lots of Gulfport residents charge a cart in the carport. SPAN shows you what that charging actually uses.

A SPAN Panel handles up to 48 circuits. Larger homes, or services over 200 amps, may need more than one panel. We size it at the site visit.

Flood-aware SPAN installs

Parts of Gulfport took water in the 2024 hurricanes. If your panel or meter was under water, leave the power off: saltwater-exposed equipment usually has to be replaced, and Duke Energy may require repairs and an inspection before reconnecting. If a home is being substantially improved or repaired after storm damage, the City of Gulfport may require electrical equipment to be raised above a set elevation. When that applies, we plan the SPAN Panel’s location around it before we quote. For the immediate problem, call our 24/7 emergency line for Gulfport.

SPAN with solar and battery backup

SPAN works with existing solar and battery systems when the battery is on SPAN’s compatibility list. Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH aPower work with every SPAN Panel model. Powerwall 2, SolarEdge, and Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10T work with the SPAN Panel MAIN 32. SPAN’s Backup Overload Protection (NEC 2023 Article 702.4) helps prevent brownouts and the service calls that come with battery resets. We confirm your inverter, battery and gateway before we quote.

No solar or battery yet? We can add solar, battery backup and energy monitoring through our licensed partner installers as one coordinated project. Our partners install the solar and battery equipment; Keywest Lights & Electric manages the project and does the electrical work, including the SPAN Panel and interconnection wiring. SPAN and a generator

A standby generator connects upstream of SPAN through a listed transfer switch; generator output never lands in the SPAN Panel, and portable-generator interlocks can’t be installed in it. SPAN doesn’t communicate with the generator, so generator power shows as grid power in the app. With a generator only, you shed loads by hand in the app. With a generator as part of a compatible battery system, you get SPAN’s full battery outage experience.

Permits in Gulfport

Gulfport runs its own building department: the City of Gulfport Building Department, part of Community Development, at 5330 23rd Ave S. We apply through the city’s online permit portal and meet the city inspector.

  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We coordinate the disconnect and reconnect when the meter has to be pulled.

How a SPAN install works

  1. Consultation call. Tell us about the house, the panel or fuse box, and what you want to add.
  2. Site visit and load calculation. Panel, meter, service size, grounding, and any solar, battery or generator equipment.
  3. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job is on its own line, including any service or grounding work. We don’t quote SPAN prices over the phone.
  4. City of Gulfport permit and Duke Energy coordination.
  5. Install and commissioning. Most SPAN installs take about a day; a combined service upgrade takes longer. We commission the panel and add whole-house surge protection.
  6. Inspection and app walkthrough. We meet the inspector and show you how circuit control and backup priorities work in the SPAN Home app.

Storm-season electrical prep

Pinellas still sees tropical weather into fall. Before you book planned work, a few accurate notes:

  • Standby generators connect through a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable units need a listed interlock or inlet – not a dryer outlet.
  • Panel-mounted surge protection protects HVAC and electronics from utility spikes; Florida’s code requires it when service equipment is replaced. Details: whole-house surge protection.
  • If water reached the meter can or panel, arrange an inspection before restoring power. We answer emergency calls around the clock without promising arrival windows.
  • Generator and service upgrades need permits – see also generator installation and hookups.

Warranty and financing

  • 3-year workmanship warranty on our electrical work, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. That’s separate from SPAN’s own 10-year limited panel warranty, which requires installation by SPAN or a SPAN Authorized Installer.
  • Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
  • Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Gulfport SPAN FAQ

Are you a SPAN Authorized Installer? Yes. Keywest Lights & Electric is a SPAN Authorized Installer, with 20 SPAN installs completed. We’re licensed (EC#13014717) and have done electrical work in Pinellas County since 2010.

How much does a SPAN Panel cost in Gulfport? It depends on the SPAN model, your current panel and service, any grounding or code corrections an older home needs, the permit, and add-ons. We give an itemized quote after a site visit.

Can you install SPAN in a cottage with a fuse box? Yes, but usually as part of a service upgrade. SPAN replaces the fuse box; it doesn’t increase the power coming into the house. We’ll show you the load calculation and the options.

Do I need solar or a battery to get SPAN? No. SPAN works as a smart replacement panel on its own, and it’s ready for solar, batteries and EV charging later. Battery backup control does require a compatible battery.

Can SPAN help me add an EV charger without a service upgrade? Sometimes, on a 100- to 200-amp service. SPAN PowerUp can manage EV charging to keep your home within its service rating. It requires qualification and enrollment, and we’ll tell you after the load calculation whether it fits.^

Do you install SPAN elsewhere in south Pinellas? Yes. See SPAN in Snell Isle and Old Northeast and SPAN in St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island.
