Charging at home in Largo

A Level 2 charger turns an overnight stop in your driveway into a full battery for most daily driving. The charger itself is the easy part. The real question in Largo is usually the house: the median home here was built in 1978 (Census ACS 2020–2024), and many still have the original service and panel. A 40- or 48-amp charging circuit is one of the largest loads a home can have, so we check what your electrical system can carry before anything gets installed.

Largo also has more kinds of housing than most Pinellas cities, and each one changes the job:

  • Single-family homes in neighborhoods off Belcher Rd, Starkey Rd, Clearwater-Largo Rd and Indian Rocks Rd. Many have carports or garages on the far side of the house from the panel, so wire routing matters.
  • Condos and villas, where parking is shared and the association has a say in how the circuit gets to your space.
  • Manufactured-home and 55+ communities, which are common in Largo and have their own service equipment and community rules.
  • Rental homes. Almost four in ten Largo homes are rented, and more landlords are adding chargers to attract tenants.
  • Businesses along Ulmerton Rd, East Bay Dr, Missouri Ave and Seminole Blvd adding charging for staff, customers or fleet vehicles.

Do you need a panel or service upgrade first?

Not always, and we won’t tell you that you do unless the load calculation says so. Many Largo homes can add a Level 2 charger on their existing service. Here’s how we decide:

  1. Load calculation. We look at your service size, panel condition, and the big loads you already have (AC, pool pump, water heater, range, dryer).
  2. Right-size the charger. Many drivers do fine with a 32- or 40-amp circuit. A bigger circuit isn’t always better if it forces an upgrade you don’t need.
  3. Consider load management. Some chargers can throttle themselves when the house is busy. With a SPAN smart panel, SPAN PowerUp™ can pause or slow EV charging to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^
  4. Upgrade only when it’s needed. If the panel is full, failing or a brand insurers flag, or the service truly can’t carry the load, we’ll explain a panel upgrade or service upgrade and include it as a separate line on your quote.

Hardwired charger or 14-50 outlet?

  • Hardwired wall charger. Our usual recommendation. It’s a cleaner install, supports higher charging speeds, and avoids wear on an outlet that gets plugged and unplugged.
  • NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Works with plug-in mobile chargers. We install it with the GFCI protection the code requires for EV charging receptacles, and an outdoor-rated cover if it’s in a carport.

You can buy your own charger or we can recommend one. Any brand is fine as long as it’s listed by a recognized testing lab (UL, ETL or similar). We’ll confirm it suits your vehicle and your electrical service before we install it.

Florida weather matters. Carports and driveways in Largo take sideways summer rain and the occasional tropical storm. We use outdoor-rated equipment, mount the charger at a sensible height, and route the cable so it reaches the charge port without stretching across the driveway.

Condos in Largo: your right to install a charger

Florida law (Section 718.113(8), Florida Statutes) says a condominium association can’t prohibit a unit owner from installing an EV charging station in the owner’s limited common element or exclusively designated parking space. The association can set reasonable conditions, including:

  • Following safety requirements and reasonable architectural standards
  • Using a licensed firm for the installation
  • Separate metering (or an embedded meter) so the owner pays for the electricity
  • Proof of insurance naming the association, and the owner covering installation, maintenance and removal costs

We’re used to working with condo boards and property managers. We’ll look at the meter room, figure out the best path from your meter to your space, and give the association the specs it asks for. Shared meter centers sometimes limit what’s possible, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case. (This is general information, not legal advice. Check your declaration and talk to your association.)

Manufactured homes and 55+ communities

Manufactured homes often have a meter pedestal at the lot and a feeder to the home that were sized decades ago. Adding a charger can mean checking the pedestal, the feeder and the home’s panel, and getting park management’s approval. Call us with your community’s name and a photo of your panel and pedestal, and we’ll tell you what to expect before we come out.

Permits and the utility

  • Inside Largo city limits: permits come from the City of Largo Building Services division at 201 Highland Ave.
  • Unincorporated Largo-area addresses (such as Ridgecrest and other unincorporated pockets around the city): permits go through Pinellas County.
  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida. If a service upgrade is needed, we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect.

A new 240-volt circuit for an EV charger needs an electrical permit. We pull it and meet the inspector.

How a Largo EV charger install works

  1. Quick call or photos. Tell us your vehicle, where you park, and send a photo of your panel.
  2. Site visit and load calculation.
  3. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line, including any upgrade, trenching or condo work. No prices over the phone.
  4. Permit.
  5. Install. A typical garage install with the panel nearby takes a few hours. Long runs, detached garages and condo garages take longer.
  6. Inspection and setup. We pass inspection, set the charger’s amperage correctly, and help you connect its app.

Hurricane season notes for this area

October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:

  • Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
  • Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.

Largo EV charger FAQ

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Largo? It depends on the distance from your panel to where you park, your panel and service, the charger, and whether it’s a house, condo or manufactured home. We give an itemized quote after a site visit so you see every line.

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector or other brand? Yes. We install any listed Level 2 charger, including the one your car’s maker recommends.

My Largo condo board says no. Can they do that? Under Section 718.113(8), Florida Statutes, a condo association can’t prohibit a unit owner from installing a charger in their own limited common element or designated parking space, but it can set reasonable conditions. We can help you put together what the board needs.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers? The federal credit for home charging equipment only applied to property placed in service by June 30, 2026, so new installs no longer qualify. Ask your tax advisor about anything else that may apply.

Do I need a permit in Largo? Yes, from the City of Largo inside city limits or Pinellas County outside them. We pull it.

How long does installation take? Usually a few hours for a straightforward garage install. We’ll tell you up front if your job needs more time.
