Pinellas Park is mostly concrete-block houses from the 1960s through the ’80s, plus a busy strip of shops, flex warehouses and offices along US 19, Park Boulevard and 49th Street. Both kinds of buildings hit the same wall: the electrical service was sized for a lighter load than they carry now. Keywest Lights & Electric upgrades residential and commercial services here after a written load calculation, with the city permit filed and the Duke Energy meter work scheduled. We’re licensed (EC#13014717) and about 5½ miles away in Seminole.
Call (727) 476-7079 or request a service upgrade assessment. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

Solid walls, small services
About 53,600 people live in Pinellas Park, and the median home was built in 1978 (Census ACS 2020–2024). On the residential streets around 66th Street, 70th Avenue and Belcher Road, the block construction holds up fine through storms. What usually doesn’t keep up is the original 100-amp or 150-amp service, which was never meant to feed:
- a heat pump or a second AC zone
- a pool pump and heater
- a Level 2 charger, or two
- a converted garage or workshop with its own mini-split, compressor and 240-volt tools
- a remodeled kitchen with induction and double ovens
A lot of Pinellas Park homes also double as a small-business base, so the garage often carries more load than the kitchen.
Is it the service, or just the panel?
Panel problems (corrosion, a recalled brand, no open slots, a 4-point inspection flag) are frequently solved by a panel upgrade in Pinellas Park, keeping the same amperage.
Capacity problems need a service upgrade: a larger meter socket, heavier service-entrance conductors, a main disconnect, grounding and bonding to current code, and in most cases a new panel. Duke Energy pulls the meter at the start and resets it after inspection.
In between sits load management. A load-managed EV charger, or a SPAN smart panel in Pinellas Park with SPAN PowerUp™, can pause or slow large loads to stay inside the existing rating and can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer and we’ll tell you if that route fits.
Adding a car charger? EV charger installation in Pinellas Park covers the circuit side.
What the outside of the house tells us
- Meter and panel bolted side by side on an exterior wall is the norm here. Years of wind-driven rain rust the cans, lugs and breakers; replacements go in with the correct outdoor rating and sealing.
- Overhead versus underground. Older blocks generally have an overhead drop and will need a new mast and weatherhead; a few newer pockets are underground. Duke owns the drop or lateral and the meter. The mast, weatherhead, meter socket and interior wiring are the owner’s.
- Low spots and drainage canals. Some parcels near the city’s drainage canals fall in FEMA flood zones. When a project is a substantial improvement or a storm-damage rebuild, the building department may want electrical equipment above a set elevation. We look up the parcel before pricing.
- Manufactured-home communities. The city has a number of them; power typically comes from a lot pedestal with its own rules. Call and describe the setup.
Commercial and light-industrial upgrades
The Gateway area, US 19 and Park Boulevard are full of flex spaces, auto shops, restaurants and small warehouses that change tenants often. A new tenant’s equipment list (compressors, welders, walk-in coolers, a commercial kitchen) can outgrow the existing service quickly. We survey the switchgear, work with your engineer or GC when there is one, and pull the permit. See commercial electrical service.
Permits: inside the city or not?
A Pinellas Park mailing address isn’t proof you’re in city limits.
- City of Pinellas Park: Building Development, 6051 78th Ave N. Applications and inspection requests go through the city’s online permit portal.
- Kenneth City is its own town, while Lealman and other unincorporated pockets with Pinellas Park or St. Petersburg addresses go to Pinellas County.
- Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We give Duke the required notice before breaking the meter seal, and Duke reconnects once the inspection is approved.
Unpermitted service work tends to show up later, on an insurance claim or at closing.
Line items you’ll see
- meter socket and service equipment to Duke and code requirements
- mast and weatherhead for overhead drops
- new panel, Good (ABB) or Best (Siemens), with every circuit tested and labeled
- whole-house surge protection, required by the electrical code adopted in Florida when dwelling service equipment is replaced (surge protection details)
- grounding and bonding corrected
- permit, inspection and Duke coordination
If a standby generator is in your plans, we can lay out the transfer switch while the service is open. See generator installation and hookups.
How a Pinellas Park upgrade runs
We start with a site visit and a load calculation, then send an itemized quote after the site visit (no service upgrade prices by phone). After you sign off, we file the permit and book Duke. Install day usually means the power is off for part of one day. Then the inspection, the Duke reconnect, and a labeled circuit directory for your panel door.
Warranty, financing and hours
Our workmanship warranty runs 3 years, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval; checking your options doesn’t affect your credit score. The office is open 7 AM–5 PM, with weekend service and 24/7 emergency calls.
Keywest Lights & Electric is a woman-owned, family-run contractor in business since 2010, a Home Depot preferred contractor, bondable to $1M, with projects up to $2M. Solar and battery systems are installed by our licensed partner installers; we handle the electrical work and manage the project.
Pinellas Park service upgrade FAQ
How much will a service upgrade cost? It depends on whether the service is overhead or underground, the meter socket and panel, grounding work and the permit. You get an itemized quote after a site visit.
Do most homes here need 200 amps? Many with central AC, a pool and an EV do. A load calculation tells us, and we walk you through it.
Can I add an EV charger and skip the upgrade? Often. A load-managed charger or a SPAN panel using SPAN PowerUp can keep the house under its rating. PowerUp requires qualification and enrollment, and results are site-specific.
How long will the power be off? Typically part of one day. We coordinate the timing with Duke and tell you in advance.
Who issues the permit? The City of Pinellas Park for city addresses; Pinellas County for Lealman and other unincorporated pockets. We handle it either way.
Do you upgrade commercial services? Yes, for shops, flex spaces and offices. We assess the existing gear, coordinate with any engineer or GC, and pull the permit.
