What a SPAN Panel changes in a Safety Harbor home

A SPAN Panel takes the place of your breaker panel. Each circuit is metered and can be switched on or off in the SPAN Home app, so you can see what the pool pump, the second AC or the EV charger is drawing right now, shut a forgotten circuit off from the office, and pick up new features through free over-the-air updates. It takes standard 1-inch breakers and is NEMA 3R rated, so it can go inside the garage or on an exterior wall.

Most Safety Harbor SPAN conversations start from one of three places:

  1. The panel is due anyway. A 1980s or ’90s panel that’s packed with doubled-up breakers, rusting at the bottom, or from a brand an insurer flagged. You’re paying for a new panel either way, and SPAN turns that panel into something you can monitor and control.
  2. An EV, heat pump or induction range is on the way. On a 100- to 200-amp service, SPAN PowerUp™ can manage EV charging so the house stays within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ Plenty of Safety Harbor commuters cross the Courtney Campbell every day, and overnight charging is where this matters.
  3. Solar and a battery are already on the roof, or planned. SPAN lets you choose which circuits get backup power, change those choices partway through an outage, and see how much battery time is left. SPAN says it extends battery life by 40% during an outage.*

Safety Harbor homes and what we find in the panel

Safety Harbor has about 17,000 residents, and its median home was built in 1984 (Census ACS 2020–2024), newer than most of Pinellas County but still old enough that many panels are original. Most homes are owner-occupied, and owners tend to stay, which is why we so often see a panel that has absorbed thirty years of additions.

  • Cottages and mid-century homes near downtown and Main Street. Smaller services, separate meters and panels, and the occasional Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. We check the service size and grounding first. If the service is too small for what you want SPAN to manage, we’ll say so and quote the service upgrade on its own line.
  • Subdivisions off McMullen-Booth Road. Attached garages, original panels in the garage wall, pools added in the 2000s, and owners now adding an EV. This is the most common SPAN job in town, and usually the most straightforward: the SPAN Panel goes where the old panel was.
  • Homes near Old Tampa Bay and Bayshore Boulevard. Salt air shortens the life of exterior panels, meter cans and breakers. SPAN’s NEMA 3R enclosure is rated for outdoor use, and we plan corrosion-aware fittings and a careful look at grounding.
  • Townhomes and HOA communities. The panel inside your unit or garage is usually yours. Exterior work or changes to shared meter banks may need the association’s sign-off.

A SPAN Panel handles up to 48 circuits. Larger homes, or homes on a service over 200 amps, may need more than one SPAN Panel or a different layout. We size it at the site visit, not over the phone.

SPAN with solar and battery backup

SPAN works with an existing solar and battery system when the battery is on SPAN’s compatibility list. Tesla Powerwall 3 and FranklinWH aPower work with every SPAN Panel model. Powerwall 2, SolarEdge, and Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10T work with the SPAN Panel MAIN 32. SPAN’s Backup Overload Protection (NEC 2023 Article 702.4) helps prevent brownouts and the service calls that come with battery resets. Before we quote, we confirm your inverter, battery and gateway so there are no surprises on install day.

Thinking about solar or a battery but don’t have one yet? We can add solar, battery backup and energy monitoring through our licensed partner installers as one coordinated project. Our partners install the solar and battery equipment; Keywest Lights & Electric manages the project and does the electrical work, including the SPAN Panel and the interconnection wiring. SPAN and a standby generator

Some Safety Harbor homes already have a standby generator. SPAN can live alongside one, with a few limits worth knowing first:

  • The generator connects upstream of SPAN through a listed transfer switch. Generator output never lands in the SPAN Panel, and a portable-generator interlock can’t be installed in it.
  • SPAN doesn’t talk to the generator, so generator power shows up as grid power in the app.
  • Generator only, no battery: no automatic load shedding. You turn non-essential circuits off yourself in the app, which still beats walking out to the panel with a flashlight.
  • Generator as part of a compatible battery system: you get SPAN’s full battery outage experience.

Outages on the upper bay

After the 2024 hurricanes, many Pinellas County homes, Safety Harbor included, went days without power, and owners with batteries learned how quickly a whole-house load drains them. With SPAN, the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and a bedroom fan can stay on while the pool pump and water heater wait, and you can see the estimated backup time and change priorities as the outage drags on.

Permits in Safety Harbor: Pinellas County

Under the city’s interlocal agreement with Pinellas County (effective May 1, 2021), electrical permits for private property in Safety Harbor are filed directly with Pinellas County Building Services, 440 Court St., Clearwater, through the county’s online Access Portal. The county schedules the inspection too. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

  • Utility: Most of Safety Harbor is Duke Energy Florida territory, but TECO serves parts of northeast Pinellas nearby. Check your bill. If the meter has to be pulled, we schedule the disconnect and reconnect with your utility.
  • HOAs: exterior equipment changes may need architectural approval. We send the specs your board usually asks for and wait for written approval before we start.

How a SPAN install works

  1. Consultation call. Tell us about the house, the panel, any solar or battery, and what you’re planning to add.
  2. Site visit and load calculation. We open the panel, check the meter base and grounding, note any solar, battery or generator gear, and add up your loads.
  3. Itemized quote after the site visit. The SPAN Panel, any service or grounding work, surge protection and the permit each get their own line. No SPAN prices over the phone.
  4. Pinellas County permit and utility coordination.
  5. Install day. Most SPAN installs take about a day, with the power off for part of it. We move your circuits over, commission the panel, tie in any existing solar or battery, and add whole-house surge protection.
  6. Inspection and app walkthrough. We meet the county inspector, then show you how circuit control and backup priorities work in the SPAN Home app.

Hurricane season notes for this area

Gulf coast storm season runs through November. For planned electrical work we keep recommendations practical:

  • Generator hookups need a listed transfer switch or interlock – never a back-feed cord. See generator installation.
  • Whole-house surge protection belongs at the panel and is required when service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After flooding or a strike: leave damaged panels and wet equipment off until inspected. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits still apply for generator, panel and service work – we pull the correct city or county permit with the job.

Warranty and financing

  • 3-year workmanship warranty on our electrical work, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. That’s separate from SPAN’s own 10-year limited panel warranty, which requires installation by SPAN or a SPAN Authorized Installer.
  • Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
  • Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.
