Every year around Thanksgiving, the same thing happens on streets across Seminole, Largo and the rest of Pinellas County. The ladders come out of the garage, the tangled strands come down from the attic, and somebody spends a weekend on the roof edge clipping lights to the gutters. Then, a few weeks into January, it all happens again in reverse.

Permanent roofline lighting is built to end that routine. Instead of seasonal strands, a low-profile track and small LED fixtures are mounted along your fascia or soffit once, wired to a controller, and run from an app on your phone. You get Christmas lights when you want them, and the rest of the year the same lights can do a lot more than holidays.
Keywest Lights & Electric is an official JellyFish Lighting dealer serving homeowners in Seminole, Largo, Clearwater, St. Pete, Pinellas Park, Dunedin and the beaches. Here is a practical look at how permanent Christmas lights work, what to think about on a Florida home, and what an install visit looks like.
Permanent vs. traditional Christmas lights
Traditional holiday light installation is a recurring job. Whether you hang the lights yourself or hire someone each season, the work starts over every year: clips, extension cords, timers plugged into outdoor outlets, and bulbs that burn out or get knocked loose by wind and rain. After the holidays, the lights come down and go back into storage.
Permanent lights change the math in a few ways:
- One installation, many years of use. The track and fixtures stay up year-round, so there is no annual hang and take-down.
- No ladders every season. Once the system is in, changing the look is done from your phone, not from the top of a ladder.
- Cleaner wiring. Instead of extension cords snaking across the yard, the lights run back to a controller and power supply installed in a protected location.
- More than one holiday. The same lights that do red and green in December can do orange in October, red, white and blue in July, or a soft warm white every night.
Traditional strands still make sense for renters or anyone who only wants lights for a few weeks a year. If you decorate every season, permanent lighting is worth a look.
How app-controlled permanent lighting works
A permanent system has three main parts: the light fixtures and track along the roofline, a power supply, and a controller. The controller connects to your home Wi-Fi, and you run everything from an app.
From the app you can:
- Pick a single color or a multicolor pattern for each zone of the house
- Choose holiday and event patterns, or build your own
- Set schedules so the lights come on at dusk and shut off at a set time
- Adjust brightness, from bright accent lighting down to a subtle glow
Patterns can chase, twinkle or fade, and you can change the look in seconds.
Year-round lighting, with Christmas as one use
Most people first ask about permanent lights because of Christmas, but the homeowners who get the most out of them use them all year. A few examples:
- Everyday architectural lighting. A warm white along the roofline shows off the shape of the house at night and makes a home look finished from the street.
- Security. Bright white light along the eaves lights up the driveway, side yard and entry, and you can schedule it to come on every night.
- Game days. Bucs, Lightning or Rays colors on game night, or your college colors on Saturdays.
- Holidays and events. Halloween, the Fourth of July, birthdays, graduations and backyard parties around the pool or lanai.
On one recent St. Pete Beach job, the lights run across the back of the house above the patio and pool, so the same system that does holiday colors out front also sets the mood for evenings outside.
What the roofline and soffit install involves

Permanent lights are designed to blend in during the day. The track is low-profile and is chosen to blend with your trim, so from the street it reads as part of the house rather than as a string of bulbs. At night, the small fixtures do the work.
During the install, the crew:
- Measures the rooflines and zones you want lit (front, garage, sides, back patio)
- Mounts the track along the fascia or soffit, following the lines of the house
- Sets the fixtures at even spacing so the light reads clean and continuous
- Runs the wiring back to the power supply and controller
- Tests every zone and sets up the app with you
Every house is different: the layout, trim style and eave height all affect how the lights are run, so each job starts with a look at the actual home.
Salt air, sun and storms
Anything mounted outside in Pinellas County deals with heat, strong sun, heavy summer rain and, closer to the Gulf, salt air. A few things matter for permanent lighting here:
- Fixtures and track built for outdoor use. Permanent systems are designed to stay outside year-round, which is very different from seasonal strands that were never meant to stay up.
- Protected connections. Connections and wire runs should be kept out of standing water and direct exposure wherever possible.
- Controller and power supply placement. The electronics belong in a sheltered spot, such as a garage wall or a protected outdoor location, not out in the open.
- Storm season. The track is mechanically fastened to the house, so it is not hanging loose the way clip-on lights do. After a major storm, it is still smart to look along the roofline like you would for gutters and trim.
JellyFish products carry a manufacturer warranty of 5 years on the roofline lights, controllers and power supplies. That product warranty is separate from our workmanship warranty, which is 2 years on every Keywest Lights & Electric job and 5 years for Member Care Plan members.
The electrical side
If we add a new outlet or dedicated circuit for the controller, we pull the permit and handle the inspection.
This is where working with a licensed electrical contractor helps. Permanent lighting is low-voltage at the fixtures, but the system still needs a proper power source, and that part is regular electrical work.
Things we look at on every job:
- Where the power comes from. The power supply needs a suitable outlet. Often that is an existing outlet in the garage or a protected outdoor outlet. If there is not a good one where the controller should go, we can add an outlet or a dedicated circuit.
- GFCI protection. Outlets in garages and outdoors should be GFCI-protected. If the outlet you would use is not, we will point that out and can correct it.
- Controller location. The controller should be somewhere sheltered, close to the power supply, and within reach of your Wi-Fi signal.
- Clean wire routing. Wiring should be run neatly and protected where it passes through or along the house, so it looks right and holds up.
- Permits as applicable. If the work includes new electrical such as an added circuit or outlet, we handle permits where the local building department requires them.
As an electrical contractor, we can also handle related work on the same visit, such as outdoor outlets or landscape lighting.
What a visit looks like
If you are thinking about permanent Christmas lights in Seminole or anywhere in Pinellas, here is how it usually goes:
- Free estimate. We come out, walk the house with you and look at the rooflines, trim and the areas you want lit.
- Power and controller check. We find where the power supply and controller should go and check the outlet or circuit that will feed them.
- Written proposal. You get a clear written proposal for the zones you choose before any work is scheduled.
- Installation. The crew installs the track and fixtures, wires the system and tests each zone.
- App setup. We set up the app with you, walk through colors, patterns and schedules, and make sure you are comfortable running it.
Financing is available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval, and you can check your options without affecting your credit score. Member Care Plan members get 7% off labor and materials.
FAQ
When should I book permanent Christmas lights in Seminole or Pinellas? As early in the fall as you can. Interest climbs through November, and install calendars fill before December. Once the lights are up, they are ready for this Christmas and every holiday after.
Do sea turtle lighting rules apply? On Gulf-front beaches, turtle-smart schedules run roughly May 1 through October 31 — full Christmas color after that. Inland Seminole and most bay-side homes are not under Gulf nesting-beach rules. We plan scenes for your address.
Do I need a permit? If we add a new outlet or dedicated circuit for the controller, we pull the permit and handle the inspection.
Is this the same as temporary Christmas light strings? No. Temporary strings go up and come down every year. A permanent JellyFish system stays in a low-profile under-eave track, with Christmas colors on a phone schedule and warm-white accent or security light the rest of the year. Keywest Lights & Electric installs it as an Authorized Dealer — we do not sell DIY kits.
Who installs JellyFish Lighting? Keywest Lights & Electric — an independent licensed electrical contractor (EC13014717) and Authorized Dealer of JellyFish Lighting. We are not JellyFish Lighting, the company.
