Most electrical fires and shocks start with something nobody noticed: a loose breaker connection that runs hot, an outlet that lost its ground years ago, a GFCI that no longer trips. Pinellas County’s median home was built in 1977 (Census ACS 2020–2024), so many panels and circuits are now more than 40 years old. A checkup finds those problems while they’re still small.

What a licensed electrician checks

  • Electrical panel: cover off, looking for heat damage, corrosion, loose or double-tapped connections, and brands with a known history of problems such as Federal Pacific and Zinsco
  • Breakers: sizing matched to the wire, signs of overheating, and breakers that trip too often or not at all
  • GFCI and AFCI protection: every protected outlet and breaker tested so it actually trips, plus a list of the kitchen, bath, garage and outdoor spots that should have it
  • Outlets and switches: tested for correct wiring, grounding, loose contacts and warm or scorched faceplates
  • Grounding and bonding: the grounding electrode connection and bonding of water pipes and other metal systems
  • Surge protection: whether you have a whole-house surge protector and whether it still shows protected
  • Smoke detector power: that hardwired smoke detectors have power and are interconnected where they should be
  • Visible wiring: attic, garage and exposed runs checked for damage, splices without boxes, aluminum branch wiring and amateur work
  • Outdoor and pool circuits: outdoor outlets, in-use covers, pool and spa equipment circuits, and landscape lighting transformers

After the walk-through you get a written report with recommendations, ranked from “fix now” to “keep an eye on it,” so you can plan repairs on your own schedule.

Hurricane season: before and after the storm

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and storms are hard on electrical systems near the Gulf. Lightning and power surges damage electronics, salt air corrodes outdoor connections, and wind-driven rain gets into meter bases, outdoor outlets and pool equipment.

  • Before the season: confirm surge protection, test GFCIs on outdoor and pool circuits, check the panel for corrosion, and make sure a portable generator hookup is safe to use
  • After a storm: if water reached outlets, the panel or pool equipment, or you notice flickering, buzzing or a burning smell once power returns, book a checkup before using those circuits
  • After flooding: leave the power off to anything floodwater touched and have an electrician check it before it’s switched back on

After a storm, if you have no power, sparks or a burning smell, call us right away. We run a 24/7 emergency electrician service.

If we find something that needs repair

You get a written price for any repair we recommend before work starts, and nothing is fixed without your OK. Common fixes after a checkup include adding GFCI and AFCI protection, a whole-house surge protector, a panel upgrade or replacement, and rewiring for older homes. Repairs carry our 2-year workmanship warranty, or 5 years for Member Care Plan members. When a repair needs a permit, we pull the permit and handle the inspection.

Financing for repairs

Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval.

Member Care Plan members save 7%

A Member Care Plan keeps a licensed electrician checking your home on a schedule. Members get 7% off labor and materials, scheduled safety visits each plan year and a 5-year workmanship warranty instead of our standard 2 years. Ask about plans when you book your checkup.

Electrical safety checkup FAQ

What does the electrical safety checkup include? A licensed electrician inspects and tests your electrical panel and breakers, GFCI and AFCI protection, outlets and switches, grounding and bonding, surge protection, power to your smoke detectors, the wiring we can see, and your outdoor and pool circuits. You get a written report with what we found and what we recommend.

How long does a checkup take? Most homes take about an hour to an hour and a half. Larger homes, homes with a pool, a detached garage or a second panel take longer. We’ll give you a time window when you book.

How much does the electrical safety checkup cost? The electrical safety checkup is $49. If we find anything that needs repair, we give you a written price before any work starts, and nothing is fixed without your OK. Call (727) 476-7079 or use the form on this page to book.

Is this the same as a code inspection or an insurance 4-point inspection? No. The checkup is a safety review of the electrical equipment we can safely reach. It isn’t a building-code inspection, an engineering study or an insurance inspection. If a 4-point or home inspection flagged your panel or wiring, we can repair what was flagged.

When is the best time to book before hurricane season? Spring, before the Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1, gives you time to fix anything we find. During the season, book a checkup before a storm if you have an older panel, no whole-house surge protection or a generator hookup that has never been tested.

Should I get a checkup after a storm or flooding? Yes, if water reached your outlets, panel, pool equipment or outdoor circuits, or you smell burning or see flickering after power comes back. If floodwater touched electrical equipment, leave that power off and have an electrician check it before it’s switched back on.

Do Member Care Plan members get a discount? Yes. Member Care Plan members get 7% off labor and materials on repairs and new work at their enrolled address, and a 5-year workmanship warranty instead of our standard 2 years. Plans also include scheduled safety visits each plan year.

Do you do checkups for renters or homes being sold? Yes. Renters can book a checkup, but repairs need the property owner’s OK. Buyers and sellers often book one to get a clear list of electrical issues before closing.
