Many Gulfport homes still run on the 60- or 100-amp service they were built with. We upgrade cottages, bungalows, waterfront homes and Beach Boulevard businesses to 200 amps (or more when the numbers call for it), run the load calculation first, pull the City of Gulfport permit, and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Duke Energy. Licensed (EC#13014717), about 9 miles away at 6248 Seminole Blvd.
Call (727) 476-7079 or request a service upgrade assessment. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

Why Gulfport homes outgrow their service
Gulfport has about 11,700 residents, and its median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS 2020–2024), the oldest of any city on our main service list. Around the waterfront district and the streets near Boca Ciega Bay, a lot of homes are 1920s–50s cottages and bungalows that were wired for a few lights, a radio and maybe a window unit. Decades of renovations later, the same service is being asked to run central AC, a modern kitchen, a tankless water heater, a pool pump or an EV.
What we usually find at a Gulfport meter:
- 60- and 100-amp services, often with a fuse box or an early breaker panel behind them. These are the homes where a service upgrade, not just a new panel, is usually the real fix.
- Separate meters and panels mounted on an exterior wall, with old service entrance cable that has dried out and cracked in the sun.
- Overhead service drops running through mature trees, with masts and weatherheads that have been bent by storms or limbs.
- Ungrounded or under-grounded systems in the oldest homes, which have to be corrected when the service is replaced.
- Salt-worn equipment on homes close to the bay, where meter cans and lugs corrode faster than they do inland.
Signs your service can’t keep up: the main breaker trips or fuses blow, lights dim when the AC starts, there’s no room in the panel for a new circuit, or an insurer, inspector or buyer flags the service.
Service upgrade or panel upgrade?
- A panel upgrade replaces the fuse box or breaker panel. The power coming into the house stays the same.
- A service upgrade increases the incoming power. That usually means a new meter can or meter/main combo, new service entrance conductors, a main disconnect, grounding and bonding, and a new panel, with Duke Energy disconnecting and reconnecting.
In Gulfport the two often go together. If your home is on a 60-amp service with a fuse box, replacing the box without increasing the service rarely gets you where you want to be.
Load calculation first
We add up what the house already uses and what you’re planning to add, using the National Electrical Code method, and show you the numbers.
- Sometimes a new panel on the existing service is enough, especially for a smaller cottage on a 100-amp service with gas appliances.
- Sometimes load management avoids the upgrade. A load-managed EV charger, or a SPAN smart panel with SPAN PowerUp™, can pause or slow big loads to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs.
- Sometimes the upgrade is the right call. Then every part of the job goes on its own line of your quote.

Flood zones and substantial damage
Parts of Gulfport took water in the 2024 hurricanes, and that changes how a service upgrade is planned:
- Flooded service equipment. If your meter, panel or breakers were under water, leave the power off. Saltwater-exposed equipment usually has to be replaced, and Duke Energy may require repairs and an inspection before reconnecting. For the immediate problem, call our 24/7 emergency line for Gulfport.
- Elevation. If a home is being substantially improved or repaired after storm damage, the City of Gulfport may require the meter, disconnect and panel to be raised above a set elevation as part of its substantial-damage process. That can mean relocating the service rather than replacing it in place. We check what applies to your address before we quote.
- Raising the equipment on purpose. Even when it isn’t required, some owners choose to move the meter and panel higher during an upgrade. We’ll walk you through what that involves.
Older wiring behind the new service
A new service doesn’t fix the circuits behind it. When we open up a Gulfport house for a service upgrade we often find original cloth-insulated wiring, ungrounded outlets, or a few knob-and-tube runs left over from early renovations. We’ll tell you what we see, and if some of it needs replacing, it goes on a separate line so you can decide. Rewiring →

Permits in Gulfport
Gulfport runs its own building department: the City of Gulfport Building Department, part of Community Development, at 5330 23rd Ave S. Contractors apply through the city’s online permit portal, and inspections are scheduled with the city. A service upgrade always needs a permit, and unpermitted service work can cause trouble with insurance claims and when you sell.
- Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We schedule the disconnect and reconnect when the meter has to be pulled.
How it works with us
- Site visit and load calculation: meter, panel, service drop, grounding, flood-zone questions and what you plan to add.
- Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No service upgrade prices over the phone.
- City of Gulfport permit.
- Duke Energy coordination for the disconnect and reconnect.
- Installation day. Power is typically off for part of the day; relocations and elevation changes take longer.
- Inspection and reconnect. We meet the city inspector, Duke restores power, and you get a labeled circuit directory.
Waterfront district businesses
Restaurants, bars, galleries and shops along Beach Boulevard and Shore Boulevard sometimes need more capacity for kitchen equipment, walk-in coolers, EV charging or a new tenant. We assess the existing service, coordinate with your engineer or GC, handle permitting with the city, and can schedule shutdowns for off-hours. See commercial electrical service.
Storm-season electrical prep
Pinellas still sees tropical weather into fall. Before you book planned work, a few accurate notes:
- Standby generators connect through a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable units need a listed interlock or inlet – not a dryer outlet.
- Panel-mounted surge protection protects HVAC and electronics from utility spikes; Florida’s code requires it when service equipment is replaced. Details: whole-house surge protection.
- If water reached the meter can or panel, arrange an inspection before restoring power. We answer emergency calls around the clock without promising arrival windows.
- Generator and service upgrades need permits – see also generator installation and hookups.
Warranty, financing and scheduling
- 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.
- Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
- Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Gulfport service upgrade FAQ
How much does a service upgrade cost in Gulfport? It depends on your current service, overhead or underground service, the meter location, any elevation requirements after storm damage, grounding corrections and the panel. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.
My cottage has a 60-amp service and a fuse box. What do I need? Usually a service upgrade with a new breaker panel, not just a panel swap. The load calculation confirms the size, often 200 amps for a home with central AC and modern appliances.
Who issues the permit in Gulfport? The City of Gulfport Building Department. We pull the permit and schedule the city inspection.
Will the city make me raise my meter and panel? Only in some cases, mainly when a home is being substantially improved or repaired after damage. We check your address and project before we quote.
How long will my power be off? For a simple in-place upgrade, usually part of one day. Raising or relocating the meter and panel takes longer. We give you the schedule before work starts so you can plan around it.
Can a SPAN panel avoid a service upgrade? Sometimes. With SPAN PowerUp, the panel can pause or slow big loads like EV charging to stay within your service rating. It requires qualification and enrollment, and results are site-specific. On a 60-amp service, an upgrade is usually still needed.
