Level 2 charging for Gulfport cottages, bungalows, waterfront homes and small businesses, installed by a licensed electrician (EC#13014717) about 9 miles away in Seminole. Older Gulfport homes often have small services, so we start with a load calculation, pull the City of Gulfport permit, and only recommend an upgrade if the numbers call for it.

Home charging in an older Gulfport home
Gulfport has about 11,700 residents, and its median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS 2020–2024), the oldest of any city on our main service list. Many homes near Boca Ciega Bay are 1920s–50s cottages and bungalows, and that shapes an EV install more than the charger does:
- Small services. A 60- or 100-amp service may already be close to full with central AC, a water heater and a range. The load calculation tells us whether a charger fits as-is, fits at a lower setting, or needs more capacity.
- Fuse boxes and older panels, including Federal Pacific and Zinsco. We won’t add a 40-amp continuous load to one of those. We’ll explain why, and the fix usually starts with a panel upgrade in Gulfport.
- Carports, driveways and detached garages instead of an attached garage. We’ll lay out the route options, such as exterior conduit or an underground run to a detached garage, and explain the trade-offs.
- Alley and street parking. If you don’t have off-street parking, a home charger may not be practical. We’ll tell you honestly.
Load calculation first, upgrades only if they’re needed
- We add up what your home already uses: AC, water heater, range, dryer and anything else on the service.
- We size the charger to how you drive. Many Gulfport drivers don’t commute far, and a 16- to 32-amp circuit covers them comfortably. That can make the difference between fitting on the existing service or not.
- We look at load management. Many chargers can be set lower or throttle themselves when the house is busy. A SPAN smart panel in Gulfport with SPAN PowerUp™ can pause or slow EV charging to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs.
- If an upgrade really is needed, the panel upgrade or service upgrade goes on its own line of your quote.
Hardwired charger or a 14-50 outlet?
- Hardwired wall charger. Usually what we recommend: tidier, supports higher charging speeds, and no outlet to wear out.
- NEMA 14-50 receptacle. Works with a plug-in mobile charger. We install it with the GFCI protection the code requires for EV charging outlets and, in a carport, an outdoor-rated in-use cover.
Bring your own charger or ask us for a recommendation. Any brand is fine if it’s listed by a recognized testing lab (UL, ETL or similar), including the Tesla Wall Connector.
Golf carts and LSVs
Lots of Gulfport residents get around town by golf cart or low-speed vehicle. Most charge from a standard outlet, but they need a properly protected one: a dedicated circuit where it makes sense, GFCI protection, and a weather-resistant outlet with an in-use cover if it’s in a carport. We’ll add one alongside your EV charger or on its own.
Flood-aware installs near the bay
Parts of Gulfport took water in the 2024 hurricanes. For homes in low-lying areas, we mount chargers and outdoor equipment as high as practical, use outdoor-rated equipment, and keep connections out of standing water. If a home is being substantially repaired or improved after storm damage, the City of Gulfport may require electrical equipment above a set elevation, and we account for that before we quote. We’d also suggest whole-house surge protection: a nearby lightning strike can damage a charger’s electronics along with your AC.
Never back-feed a house from a generator through the charger circuit or a dryer outlet. For a safe backup plan, see generator installation and hookups. Solar and battery systems are installed by our licensed partner installers; we handle the electrical work and manage the project.
Waterfront district businesses
Restaurants, shops and small multifamily buildings near Beach Boulevard call us for customer, employee and resident charging. We assess the existing service, recommend charger counts and power levels, plan load management so you don’t overbuild, and handle permitting and any Duke Energy coordination. See commercial electrical service.
Permits in Gulfport
A new 240-volt EV circuit needs an electrical permit from the City of Gulfport Building Department (Community Development, 5330 23rd Ave S). Contractors apply through the city’s online portal, and each trade pulls its own permit. We pull ours and meet the inspector.
- Utility: Duke Energy Florida, if a service upgrade is part of the job.
How a Gulfport EV charger install works
- Quick call or photos. Tell us what you drive, where you park, and send a photo of your panel with the door open.
- Site visit and load calculation.
- Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line, including any panel or service work. No prices over the phone.
- Permit.
- Install. A typical install with the panel nearby takes a few hours. Longer runs and detached garages take longer.
- Inspection and setup. We meet the inspector, set the charger’s amperage to match the circuit, and help you connect the charger’s app.
Storm-season electrical prep
Pinellas still sees tropical weather into fall. Before you book planned work, a few accurate notes:
- Standby generators connect through a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable units need a listed interlock or inlet – not a dryer outlet.
- Panel-mounted surge protection protects HVAC and electronics from utility spikes; Florida’s code requires it when service equipment is replaced. Details: whole-house surge protection.
- If water reached the meter can or panel, arrange an inspection before restoring power. We answer emergency calls around the clock without promising arrival windows.
- Generator and service upgrades need permits – see also generator installation and hookups.

Gulfport EV charger FAQ
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Gulfport? It depends on how far your panel is from where you park, your panel and service, the charger you choose, and whether any upgrade is needed. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.
My house has a 100-amp service. Can I still add a charger? Often, yes. We run a load calculation, and many homes can add a charger at a lower setting or with load management. If it truly won’t fit, we’ll explain the panel or service upgrade options.
Can you run power to my detached garage or carport? Yes. We’ll lay out the route, whether it’s exterior conduit or an underground run, and include it as its own line on your quote.
Can you add an outlet for my golf cart? Yes. We install a GFCI-protected, weather-resistant outlet, on a dedicated circuit where it makes sense.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Gulfport? Yes, from the City of Gulfport Building Department. We pull it and schedule the inspection.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers? The federal credit for home charging equipment only applied to property placed in service by June 30, 2026, so new installs no longer qualify. Ask your tax advisor about anything else that may apply.
