Gulfport has some of the oldest panels we see

Gulfport has about 11,700 residents, and its median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS 2020–2024), the oldest of any city on our main service list. Around the waterfront district and the streets near Boca Ciega Bay, many homes are cottages and bungalows from the 1920s through the 1950s, renovated in pieces over the decades. That shows up in the panel:

  • Fuse boxes. Still working in some older homes, but usually undersized, easy to over-fuse, and a common reason Florida insurers decline or surcharge a policy.
  • Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels with well-documented breaker concerns, often flagged on a 4-point inspection. More on FPE & Zinsco →
  • Small services. 60- to 100-amp services that were never meant to carry central AC, a modern kitchen and an EV at the same time.
  • Mixed wiring generations behind the panel: original circuits, remodel-era cable, and sometimes ungrounded or knob-and-tube runs that need attention when the panel is replaced. Rewiring →
  • Exterior panels near the bay where salt air has corroded breakers, bus bars and enclosures.

A nearby panel replacement

On one St. Petersburg home a few miles from Gulfport, the old exterior panel had breakers labeled by hand in marker, a faded label and loose wiring on the wall. We replaced it with a new panel beside the meter, ran the wiring in conduit, labeled every circuit, and left a clearly marked service disconnect. See the before and after →

Signs your Gulfport panel needs attention

  1. You still have fuses, or you’re replacing them often
  2. Breakers that trip often, or feel warm or buzz
  3. Lights that dim when the AC or another big appliance starts
  4. A burning or hot-plastic smell near the panel (turn off the main if it’s safe and call us right away; we take emergency calls 24/7)
  5. Rust, water stains or a cover that won’t close
  6. A home inspector or insurance agent has flagged it

Panel only, or a service upgrade too?

In many Gulfport homes the panel and the service go together. A new panel replaces the box and breakers but doesn’t add capacity by itself. If the house is on a 60- or 100-amp service and you’re adding central AC, a remodel or an EV, we run a load calculation first. Sometimes a new panel on the existing service is enough. Often an older Gulfport home also needs a service upgrade, with a new meter base and service conductors coordinated with Duke Energy. Either way, each piece goes on its own line of your quote.

Want to monitor and control every circuit from your phone? A SPAN smart panel in Gulfport replaces your panel entirely, and with SPAN PowerUp™ it can manage EV charging to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs. Solar and batteries are installed by our licensed partner installers; we handle the electrical work and manage the project.

Failed a 4-point inspection?

Read what the report actually says before you accept a quote to replace everything. Sometimes the fix is a full panel replacement. Sometimes it’s a corroded exterior panel, open breaker spaces and a few flagged outlets. On one Largo home, we fixed what the report flagged in one day instead of replacing every panel in the house. Read the 4-point case study → Send us your Gulfport report and we’ll tell you what it really requires.

Flooded or salt-damaged panels

Parts of Gulfport took water in the 2024 hurricanes. If your panel, meter or breakers were under water, leave the power off. Saltwater-exposed equipment usually has to be replaced, and Duke Energy may require repairs and an inspection before reconnecting. If a home is being substantially improved or repaired after storm damage, the City of Gulfport may require electrical equipment to be raised above a set elevation as part of its substantial-damage process. We check what applies to your address before we quote. For the immediate problem, call our 24/7 emergency line.

Waterfront district businesses

Restaurants, bars, galleries and shops along Beach Boulevard and Shore Boulevard call us when new equipment needs more circuits, a panel or subpanel is overheating, a new tenant is moving in, or an inspection calls out the electrical equipment. We assess the service and panel capacity, add subpanels or replace panels as needed, and can schedule shutdowns for off-hours so you don’t lose a day of business. See commercial electrical service.

Permits in Gulfport

Gulfport runs its own building department: the City of Gulfport Building Department, part of Community Development, at 5330 23rd Ave S. Contractors apply through the city’s online permit portal, and inspections are scheduled with the city. Each trade pulls its own permit. A panel replacement always needs one, and unpermitted panel work can cause trouble with insurance claims and when you sell.

  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We schedule the disconnect and reconnect when the meter has to be pulled.

What a Gulfport panel upgrade includes

  1. Site visit. Panel, meter, grounding and bonding, wiring at the panel, and what you plan to add.
  2. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No panel prices over the phone.
  3. Permit and Duke Energy coordination.
  4. Installation, usually in one day for a home. Power is off for part of the day. Every circuit is tested and labeled on a printed directory.
  5. Whole-house surge protection at the panel. The electrical code adopted in Florida requires it when a home’s service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.
  6. Inspection. We schedule it and meet the inspector.

Storm-season electrical prep

Pinellas still sees tropical weather into fall. Before you book planned work, a few accurate notes:

  • Standby generators connect through a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable units need a listed interlock or inlet – not a dryer outlet.
  • Panel-mounted surge protection protects HVAC and electronics from utility spikes; Florida’s code requires it when service equipment is replaced. Details: whole-house surge protection.
  • If water reached the meter can or panel, arrange an inspection before restoring power. We answer emergency calls around the clock without promising arrival windows.
  • Generator and service upgrades need permits – see also generator installation and hookups.

Warranty, financing and scheduling

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.
  • Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
  • Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Gulfport panel upgrade FAQ

How much does a panel upgrade cost in Gulfport? It depends on the panel, your service size, the condition of the meter base and grounding, and any code corrections an older home needs. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.

My cottage still has a fuse box. Do I need to replace it? Fuse boxes can still work, but they’re often undersized and easy to over-fuse, and many Florida insurers won’t cover them. Replacing one with a modern breaker panel and surge protection is one of the best safety upgrades for an older home.

How long will my power be off? Most home panel replacements are done in one day, with the power off for part of it. If the service is being upgraded too, it can take longer, and we’ll tell you up front.

Who issues the permit in Gulfport? The City of Gulfport Building Department. Each trade pulls its own permit, and we pull ours.

My panel was in floodwater. Can it be dried out? No. Saltwater-exposed panels and breakers should be replaced. Leave the power off and call us. We’ll also check whether the city’s substantial-damage rules affect where the new equipment has to go.

My insurer flagged my Federal Pacific panel. What now? Send us the inspection report. We’ll schedule a site visit, give you an itemized quote, and pull the permit once you approve it. After the final inspection we can give you the documents your insurer asks for.
