How Feather Sound homes are set up for charging

Feather Sound has about 3,500 residents and a median home built in 1986 (Census ACS 2020–2024). Most residences sit inside HOA communities of single-family homes, townhomes and condos. On a typical install we see:

  • Attached two-car garages on single-family lots where the panel is already in the garage or a few feet away.
  • Townhome and villa driveways with a short run from a unit panel to a wall or column mount.
  • Condo assigned spaces in a garage or surface lot, fed from a meter bank the association controls.
  • Gateway office suites where an employer or building owner wants a couple of workplace chargers for staff or visitors.

The right charger, the right circuit size and the right mounting spot are different for each, so we start by asking where the car actually parks overnight or during the workday.

HOAs, townhomes and Florida condo law

Many Feather Sound communities have architectural or parking rules that affect where a charger can go and how the conduit looks. We review those rules before quoting, and we prepare the drawings and equipment details a board or manager usually asks for.

If you own a condo unit, Section 718.113(8), Florida Statutes says the association can’t prohibit an EV charging station in your limited common element or exclusively designated parking space, though it can set reasonable conditions such as a licensed contractor, a permit, separate metering and responsibility for costs. We can talk with the property manager directly.

Load calculation before the charger

Mid-1980s Feather Sound services often already carry two AC systems, a pool heat pump, a hot tub or a home office. Before we recommend a charger we do a load calculation, then size the circuit to how you drive. Most residents who commute via Ulmerton Road or I-275 do fine on a 32- or 40-amp charger rather than the biggest unit on the shelf.

If the numbers are tight, we look at load management first. Many good chargers can be capped or scheduled for overnight or off-peak hours. A SPAN smart panel with SPAN PowerUp™ can slow or pause charging so the home stays inside its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs. When an upgrade really is the answer, the Feather Sound panel upgrade or a service upgrade goes on its own line of the quote.

Hardwired charger or a 14-50 outlet?

  • Hardwired wall charger: our usual recommendation in a finished garage or covered parking bay. It looks cleaner, can run at a higher rate and leaves no exposed outlet.
  • NEMA 14-50 receptacle: an option if a mobile charger already rides in your trunk. EV receptacles need GFCI protection under the code, and a hardwired unit can usually be set to a higher charging rate on a comparable circuit.

Any listed charger (UL, ETL or similar) works, including the Tesla Wall Connector. Tell us your car and we’ll suggest a charger that fits it and the circuit.

Permits in Feather Sound

An EV circuit is permitted through Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services (440 Court St., Clearwater), with applications through the county’s online Access Portal. Feather Sound is unincorporated, so the county handles residential and light-commercial electrical permits here. We confirm the path for your address, file the permit and meet the inspector.

Utility: Duke Energy Florida, if meter or service work is part of the job.

How an install works

  1. Start with photos or a call: which cars you drive, where you park, the panel with the door open, and any HOA or board requirements you already know about.
  2. Site visit and load calculation.
  3. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No prices over the phone.
  4. Permit, filed by us, plus any board or HOA package.
  5. Install day. Plan on a few hours when the parking spot is close to the panel. A long run across a shared garage, a new subpanel or a workplace dual-charger install adds time, and we tell you how much up front.
  6. Inspection, then setup. When the inspector signs off, we match the charger’s setting to its breaker and show you how to schedule charging.

Warranty, financing and scheduling

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.

  • Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Feather Sound EV charger FAQ

How much does EV charger installation cost in Feather Sound? It depends on your service and panel, the distance to where you park, HOA or condo requirements, and the charger. You get an itemized quote after a site visit.

Do I need a permit for a home EV charger in Feather Sound? Yes, because it’s a new electrical circuit. It goes to Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services. We apply and schedule the inspection.

Can our Feather Sound condo association refuse a charger? Not outright. Florida’s condo statute, Section 718.113(8), protects a unit owner’s right to install one in a limited common element or assigned space, while letting the board require reasonable conditions such as a licensed contractor, a permit and separate metering.

Will I need a panel upgrade first? Only if the load calculation says so, or if the panel is already at the end of its life. We’ll quote a Feather Sound panel upgrade as its own line when that’s the case.

Can you install chargers at a Gateway office? Yes. We handle workplace Level 2 installs under the county permit path and can schedule after hours when the suite can’t lose power during the day. See commercial electrical service.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers? The federal credit for home charging equipment only applied to property placed in service by June 30, 2026, so new installs no longer qualify. Ask your tax advisor about anything else that may apply.
