In Lealman, an EV charger quote almost always starts at the electric meter, not in the garage. The median home here was built in 1968, many still run on a 60- or 100-amp service, and a lot of garages were turned into living space decades ago. So the real questions are whether the service can carry a charger, which setting fits your driving, and where the cable can reach the carport or driveway. We answer those with a load calculation, then pull the Pinellas County permit. Licensed (EC#13014717), about 7 miles away in Seminole.

Step one: will it fit on your service?
About 20,600 people live in Lealman (Census ACS 2020–2024), mostly in 1950s–’70s concrete-block homes. Before we recommend any charger, we:
- Total what the house already draws, including central AC, water heater, range, dryer and any window units
- Match the charger to your commute. Lealman sits between St. Pete and Pinellas Park, so daily trips are short. A charger set to 16 to 32 amps often refills overnight, and that lower setting can be the difference between fitting on the existing service and needing an upgrade.
- Consider load management. Many chargers can throttle themselves when the house is busy. A SPAN smart panel with SPAN PowerUp™ can pause or slow EV charging to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs.
- Quote any upgrade separately, whether it’s a panel upgrade or a service upgrade, so you can see exactly what the charger itself costs and what the house needs.
Fuse boxes, Federal Pacific and Zinsco: we won’t add a 40-amp continuous load to any of them. We’ll show you why, and that usually turns the project into a panel replacement first.
Carports, converted garages and exterior panels
- Converted garage? The charger usually goes on an exterior wall by the driveway or in the carport.
- Exterior panel? The run is often short, in outdoor conduit along the block wall.
- Carport installs get outdoor-rated equipment, mounted so the cable doesn’t stretch across the driveway or lie in standing water.
Plug-in or hardwired? We usually recommend a hardwired wall charger because it’s neater, supports higher speeds and has no receptacle to wear out. A NEMA 14-50 outlet works with a mobile charger. We install it with the GFCI protection code requires for EV outlets, plus an in-use cover outdoors. Any listed charger is fine (UL, ETL or similar), including the Tesla Wall Connector.
For landlords
More tenants are asking for a place to charge. A permitted charger or 14-50 outlet can make a Lealman rental easier to lease. We check each property’s service, recommend a setup and coordinate access with your tenant. For multiple units, we quote each property separately.
Shops and fleets on 34th Street and 54th Avenue
Contractors, auto shops and light-industrial businesses along 34th Street N and 54th Avenue N call us about fleet and employee charging. We assess the building’s service, recommend charger counts and power levels, plan load management so you don’t overbuild, and handle the permit and any Duke Energy coordination, with tie-ins scheduled after hours. See commercial electrical service.
Permit: Pinellas County, not St. Pete
A new 240-volt EV circuit needs an electrical permit. Lealman is unincorporated, so it comes from Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services (440 Court St., Clearwater) through the county’s Access Portal, even if your mail says St. Petersburg or Pinellas Park. We pull it and meet the inspector. If a service upgrade is part of the job, we coordinate with Duke Energy Florida.
Storms, surges and backup power
Lightning can damage a charger’s electronics along with your AC. Panel-mounted whole-house surge protection protects both. Never backfeed the house from a generator through the charger circuit or a dryer outlet. See generator installation. Solar and battery systems are installed by licensed partner installers, while we handle the electrical work and manage the project.
The steps
Send a photo of your open panel and tell us what you drive and where you park. We visit, run the load calculation and send an itemized quote (never a phone price). Then we pull the county permit and install. A short run near the panel is usually a few hours. We meet the inspector, set the charger’s amperage to match the circuit and help you set up the app.
Warranty and financing
3-year workmanship warranty, or 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score.

Lealman EV charger FAQ
My house has a 100-amp service. Can I still add a charger? Often, yes. A lower charger setting or load management can make it fit. The load calculation tells us.
I still have a fuse box. Can you add a charger to it? No. We’d replace the fuse box with a panel first. We’ll quote both.
My garage was converted. Where does the charger go? Usually on an exterior wall by the driveway or in the carport, with outdoor-rated equipment.
I have a St. Petersburg mailing address. Who issues the permit? Pinellas County, because Lealman is unincorporated.
How much does an EV charger install cost in Lealman? It depends on the distance from your panel, the panel and service, and the charger. You get an itemized quote after a site visit.
Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers? The federal credit for home charging equipment only applied to property placed in service by June 30, 2026, so new installs no longer qualify. Ask your tax advisor about anything else that may apply.
