Older electrical panel opened up so a licensed electrician can trace a problem
Opening up an older panel to find what tripped, overheated or failed.

Before anything else: smoke, fire or someone shocked means 911 first. If you’re standing somewhere dry and can reach the main breaker safely, shut it off. Stay away from water near the panel, outlets, a dock box or pool equipment, and from any line that’s down. Then call us.

Is it Duke Energy or is it your house?

Look outside. If the streetlights and your neighbors are dark too, it’s almost certainly a Duke Energy outage. Report it in the Duke Energy app or at duke-energy.com, keep the fridge closed and wait it out. Call us when:

  • Only your home or unit is out and the main breaker hasn’t tripped
  • Part of the house works and part doesn’t, or lights get brighter when something big starts. That can be a failing neutral at the meter or in the service, and it can damage electronics and appliances quickly.
  • The outage started with a bang, a flash or a burning smell at the meter or panel

Call now, or book a visit?

Call tonight for: – A panel, breaker, outlet or switch that’s hot, buzzing or smells like it’s burning – Sparks or arcing anywhere, including exterior boxes and the meter socket – A main breaker that keeps tripping or a breaker that won’t reset – Water in the panel, meter or outlets after a storm, a king tide or a plumbing leak – A dock box or lift circuit that sparks, smells hot or won’t reset with the boat hanging in the lift – Pool or spa equipment that shocks or trips

Usually fine to schedule: one outlet that quit, a porch light that flickers in the wind, or a lift that just won’t run with no burning smell. Those wait for a regular visit at our standard rate. If you’re not sure, describe what you see and we’ll tell you honestly. See outlet repair and installation.

Where island emergencies come from

Indian Rocks Beach has about 3,700 residents, and the median home was built in 1981 (Census ACS 2020–2024). What fails here is shaped by the Gulf:

  • Exterior panels and meter sockets on the Gulf side rust from the inside. A loose, corroded lug can run hot for months before it fails.
  • Wiring under elevated homes, where junction boxes and disconnects take wind-driven rain and spray
  • Docks and lifts on the Intracoastal side, with GFCI devices and boxes in constant sun and salt
  • Equipment that took saltwater in 2024 and was put back into service. Salt keeps working on breakers and bus bars, and failures can show up long after the water is gone.

Once the emergency is handled, we’ll tell you plainly if a panel upgrade in Indian Rocks Beach belongs on your list, and quote it later. No sales pitch in the middle of the night.

Vacation rentals between guests

A dark rental at 4 PM on a Saturday is a different kind of emergency. Owners and managers: tell us the check-in time, how we get in and whether guests are on site. We make the unit safe, restore what can be safely restored that visit, and send the owner photos and a written summary. Bigger repairs are quoted separately.

Gulf Boulevard condos and businesses

Inside a condo, your unit’s panel and wiring are generally your responsibility. The meter bank, feeders and electrical rooms belong to the association. At 11 PM it isn’t always obvious which side the problem is on, so tell us what you know and we’ll coordinate with the manager. For restaurants and shops along Gulf Boulevard, we handle failed kitchen circuits, overheating back-of-house panels and exterior lighting faults. See commercial electrical service.

Two years after Helene

Hurricane Helene’s surge flooded much of Indian Rocks Beach in September 2024, and in November the city began mailing substantial-damage determination letters. If your home was rebuilt or repaired, the permanent electrical work had to follow that determination, and substantially damaged homes must meet current flood-elevation rules. For any repair now, the city’s Planning, Zoning & Permitting office handles zoning, flood and substantial-improvement pre-approval, and Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services (440 Court St., Clearwater) issues the electrical permit through the county Access Portal. We file it and meet the inspector.

Storm season on the island

  • Get your re-entry hangtag early. After a mandatory evacuation, the barrier islands use the free Barrier Island Re-Entry Permit from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
  • We can’t get in before officials do. Call anyway. We’ll put you on the list, tell you what to leave off and start the paperwork.
  • Flooded equipment stays off. Duke Energy won’t reconnect a flooded home until a licensed electrician has made repairs and the permit has been inspected.
  • Generators: a standby unit connects through a listed transfer switch, and a portable needs a listed inlet and interlock. Never use a cord plugged into a dryer outlet. Back-feeding can energize the lines outside and injure a lineworker. See generator installation.
  • Surge protection: a panel-mounted surge device protects HVAC and electronics, and Florida’s code requires one when service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.

Indian Rocks Beach emergency FAQ

Who do I call at 2 AM for an electrical problem in Indian Rocks Beach? Call (727) 476-7079. We take emergency calls 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.

How long will it take you to get here? That depends on the hour, traffic on Walsingham Road and Gulf Boulevard, and how many calls are ahead of yours. We’ll give you an honest estimate when you call.

Half my house has power and half doesn’t. Is that an emergency? It can be. A failing neutral or a damaged service conductor can cause it, and it can ruin appliances. If Duke isn’t reporting an outage, call us.

My rental lost power and guests arrive tonight. Can you help? Yes. Tell us the check-in time and how we get in. We’ll make the unit safe, restore what we safely can and send you a summary.

Our equipment got wet during Helene but works fine. Should we worry? Have it inspected. Saltwater keeps corroding breakers and connections, and problems can appear long after the flood.

Do you charge more after hours? Yes. After-hours calls are billed at our after-hours rate, and you hear it before we dispatch.
