Electrical emergencies we handle in Largo

Call right away, day or night, for:

  • A burning or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch, light or the panel
  • Sparks, buzzing or crackling from an outlet, switch or breaker
  • A hot outlet, switch plate or breaker
  • Partial power loss or lights that dim badly when the AC starts, which often points to a failing connection at the meter, main or pedestal
  • A breaker that trips immediately every time you reset it
  • Water in or near the panel, meter or outlets from a storm, roof leak or burst pipe
  • Storm or tree damage to the service mast, weatherhead, meter can or outside wiring
  • A business that can’t wait, like a restaurant walk-in or a medical office near Largo Medical Center

Is it just you? If the whole street is dark, it’s probably a utility outage. Report it to Duke Energy through the Duke Energy app or duke-energy.com. If it’s only your home, or only part of it, call us.

Why Largo’s emergency calls are different

Largo has about 82,600 residents and a median home built in 1978 (Census ACS 2020–2024). It also has a wider mix of housing than most Pinellas cities, and each type fails in its own way.

Manufactured-home and 55+ communities

Largo has a large number of manufactured-home communities. The power usually comes from a meter pedestal on the lot, through a feeder to the home’s panel, and much of that equipment is original. Common emergencies: burned connections at the pedestal, a feeder that’s overheating, a panel inside the home that’s corroded, and partial power loss that comes and goes. Manufactured homes have their own code requirements for service equipment and feeders, so call us and tell us about it: the community, what you’re seeing, and a photo of the pedestal and panel if it’s safe to take one. We’ll tell you up front what’s needed and whether the problem looks like it’s on your side or the community’s. In many parks the pedestal belongs to the community, so park management may need to be involved.

Rental homes and landlords

Almost four in ten Largo homes are rented. If you’re a tenant, call your landlord or property manager first: they’ll usually need to authorize the work. If you’re the landlord, we can take the call directly, make the unit safe, and send you photos and a written description of what we found and fixed. Landlords with several properties can cover them with a Member Care Plan.

Condos and villas

Your unit’s wiring and panel are usually yours. Meter rooms, common-area lighting and shared feeders belong to the association. We’ll tell you where the problem is and coordinate with your manager if it’s on the association’s side.

1970s single-family homes

In the neighborhoods off Belcher Road, Starkey Road, Clearwater-Largo Road and Indian Rocks Road, emergencies usually trace back to tired original panels, corroded exterior panels, Federal Pacific or Zinsco breakers, and circuits overloaded by decades of add-ons. After we fix the emergency, we’ll tell you if a panel upgrade in Largo should be on your list, and give you an itemized quote later. No pressure in the middle of the night.

Storms and lightning in Largo

Tropical storms bring wind damage, flooding in low spots and long outages, and summer brings daily lightning. What to know:

  • Don’t re-energize anything that’s been under water. Panels, outlets and breakers exposed to floodwater usually have to be replaced.
  • Torn-off service mast or meter can? Duke Energy is generally responsible for the service drop and meter. The owner is responsible for the mast, weatherhead, meter can and everything inside. We repair your side, pull the permit, and Duke reconnects.
  • Generator safety. Never back-feed a house through a dryer outlet. It can electrocute utility crews and neighbors. See generator installation and hookups for a safe setup.
  • Lightning and surge damage. A nearby strike can take out AC boards, pool controls, garage door openers and electronics at once. We troubleshoot it and can add whole-house surge protection.

What happens when you call

  1. We answer and ask a few questions: what you see, smell or hear, and whether anyone is in danger. We’ll tell you how to stay safe and give you an honest arrival estimate.
  2. We tell you the after-hours rate before we dispatch. No surprises.
  3. We find the cause, make it safe, and fix what can be fixed on the spot. When a permit is needed, we file it with the City of Largo Building Services division at 201 Highland Ave, or with Pinellas County for unincorporated addresses like Ridgecrest.
  4. Bigger repairs get an itemized quote. If the fix is a panel, service or rewiring job, we make it safe now and quote the rest after the site visit.

Hours: emergency calls 24/7. Office 7 AM–5 PM, with weekend service for non-emergency work.

Not an emergency? We fix those too

A dead outlet, an occasional flicker, or a GFCI that trips now and then can usually wait for a scheduled visit at our regular rate. Call and describe it, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s urgent. See outlet repair & installation and residential electrical service.

Warranty, membership and financing

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Members also get 7% off labor, including after-hours labor.
  • Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval for larger repairs like a panel or service replacement. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.

Hurricane season notes for this area

October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:

  • Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
  • Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.
