Seminole’s most common outlet problems
The median home in Seminole was built in 1979 (Census ACS 2020–2024). That means a lot of the outlets on Seminole walls have been plugged and unplugged for more than 40 years. Here’s what we fix most often around town:
- Worn-out outlets that won’t hold a plug. The contacts inside lose their grip over time. A loose plug arcs and heats the outlet, which is how scorch marks start.
- Outdoor and lanai GFCIs that keep tripping or won’t reset. Seminole is wedged between Boca Ciega Bay, Lake Seminole and the Gulf beaches, and humid, salty air corrodes outdoor devices fast. Pool equipment, landscape lighting and holiday lights all ride on these circuits.
- Half a room without power. In many 1970s Seminole homes, one GFCI in a bathroom or garage protects outlets in other rooms. When it trips, outlets elsewhere go dead and nobody knows why. We trace the circuit and label it.
- Two-prong outlets in older additions and Florida rooms, which need a real ground or GFCI protection, not just a three-prong swap.
- Aluminum branch wiring in some 1960s and ’70s homes. Aluminum connections at outlets loosen and heat over time. If we find it, we’ll explain safe repair options, and rewiring if it’s widespread.
- Surge damage after a summer thunderstorm. Fried outlets, GFCIs and USB outlets are common after a nearby lightning strike. We check the circuit and can add whole-house surge protection.
New outlets for how Seminole homes are used now
- Garage outlets for freezers, workbenches, golf carts and tool chargers, with GFCI protection and a dedicated circuit for the freezer
- Lanai, patio and pool-deck outlets with weather-resistant GFCI devices and in-use covers
- Kitchen and island outlets during remodels, including USB-C
- TV-wall outlets so cords don’t dangle
- 240-volt outlets for a dryer, range, shop tools or a plug-in EV charger. See EV charger installation.
- Dedicated circuits for mini-splits, a second fridge, a hot tub or a home office

A local electrician, not a long drive
Because our shop is on Seminole Blvd, a Seminole outlet call is a short trip for us, whether you’re near Lake Seminole Park, Seminole City Center, the St. Petersburg College Seminole campus, Bardmoor or Bay Pines. We can often fit small Seminole jobs in quickly, and if you’ve got a list (a couple of outlets, a ceiling fan, a new light fixture, smoke detectors), we’ll knock it all out in one visit.
When an outlet problem is an emergency
Turn off the breaker for that outlet and call us right away, 24/7, if an outlet:
- Smells like burning or hot plastic
- Is hot to the touch or discolored
- Sparked more than a tiny flash, or keeps sparking
- Got wet from a roof leak, plumbing leak or flooding
For anything else, like an outlet that simply stopped working, a scheduled visit at our regular rate is fine. See our 24/7 emergency electrician page for more.
Permits in Seminole
Replacing an outlet with a like-for-like device usually doesn’t need a permit. New circuits do, and so do most new outlet locations that extend wiring. Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Seminole Building Division at 9199 113th St. N. Unincorporated Seminole-area addresses (much of Bardmoor and Bay Pines) go through Pinellas County. We know which applies and pull it when it’s required.
How an outlet repair visit works
- Call or book online and tell us what’s happening. Photos help.
- We diagnose the circuit, not just the outlet, so the problem doesn’t come back.
- You approve the price before we start.
- We repair, test and label, and clean up after ourselves.
Warranty and plans
- 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Members also get 7% off labor and scheduled safety visits where we can catch tired outlets before they fail.

Hurricane season notes for this area
October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:
- Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
- Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
- After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
- Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.
Seminole outlet repair FAQ
Do you handle small jobs like one outlet? Yes. No job too small. If you have a few small items, bundling them into one visit makes the most of the trip.
Why are several outlets dead in different rooms? Usually a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, often in a bathroom, the garage or outside. Try resetting them. If that doesn’t work, or it keeps happening, call us and we’ll trace it.
Can you replace my two-prong outlets with three-prong? Yes, the right way: by running a ground or adding GFCI protection and labeling the outlets as the code allows.
How much does outlet repair cost in Seminole? It depends on what’s causing the problem and how many outlets are involved. We diagnose first and give you the price before we start.
Do you serve Bardmoor and Bay Pines? Yes. Both are minutes from our shop. They’re unincorporated Pinellas County, so any permits go through the county, and we handle that.
Can you add an outlet on my lanai or pool deck? Yes, with GFCI protection, weather-resistant devices and an in-use cover. Pool-area outlets have specific distance rules, and we’ll place them correctly.
