Clearwater’s outlet problems depend on your neighborhood

Clearwater has about 117,200 residents, and its median home was built in 1978 (Census ACS 2020–2024). The outlet calls we get look different across the city:

Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and Sand Key. Salt air is hard on anything outside. Outdoor and pool-area GFCIs corrode, trip and stop resetting; cover plates and screws rust; and the connections behind the device can corrode long before the outlet looks bad. We replace corroded devices with weather-resistant, in-use-rated GFCIs and covers, and check and clean up the wiring behind them.

Docks and boat lifts. Dock outlets and boat-lift circuits sit right over salt water. They need GFCI protection, weatherproof equipment and sound connections. A dock outlet that trips constantly is telling you something, so don’t bypass it.

Skycrest, Morningside, Del Oro and central Clearwater. Many homes date from the 1950s through the ’70s. We see two-prong outlets with no ground, worn outlets that won’t hold a plug, aluminum branch wiring in some homes, and too few outlets per room.

Countryside and north Clearwater. Mostly 1980s homes. The common calls here are GFCIs that trip after storms, surge-damaged outlets, and new outlets and circuits for remodels, home offices and garages.

Hotels, condos and short-term rentals

Hotel, condo and vacation-rental owners need rooms back in service quickly and done right. We’ve done this kind of work on Clearwater Beach: in one hotel guest room, an outlet box above the counter was broken open with exposed wiring and a ceiling box had wires hanging with no fixture. We repaired the boxes, installed new outlets and a new ceiling light, and tested every outlet before handing the room back. See the Clearwater Beach hotel repair →

For condo owners: outlets inside your unit are usually yours. For anything that touches common areas, shared walls or the meter room, we coordinate with your association or manager. See commercial electrical service for hotel and building maintenance.

Ungrounded outlets and 4-point inspections

Florida insurers often require a 4-point inspection on older homes, and ungrounded outlets and missing GFCI protection are common write-ups in central Clearwater. Send us the report. We’ll fix what it flags, either with a proper ground or with GFCI protection and the correct labeling, and give you documentation when we’re done. If the panel is flagged too, see panel upgrades in Clearwater.

After a storm or flood

Hurricane Helene’s surge in September 2024 put saltwater into homes and businesses on Clearwater Beach and along the bayfront.

  • Outlets that were under water should be replaced, not dried out. Corrosion keeps working inside the device and the box.
  • Leave flooded circuits off until they’re checked.
  • Surge damage after lightning often takes out GFCIs, USB outlets and whatever was plugged in. We test the circuit and can add whole-house surge protection.

New outlets for Clearwater homes and businesses

  • Lanai, patio, pool-deck and dock outlets with weather-resistant GFCI devices and in-use covers
  • Kitchen and island outlets during remodels, including USB-C
  • Garage outlets for freezers, workbenches, golf carts and tool chargers
  • TV-wall and home office outlets
  • 240-volt outlets for a dryer, range, shop tools or a plug-in EV charger. See EV charger installation in Clearwater.
  • Dedicated circuits for mini-splits, a second refrigerator, a hot tub or restaurant and office equipment

When an outlet problem is an emergency

Turn off the breaker for that outlet and call us right away, 24/7, if an outlet:

  • Smells like burning or hot plastic
  • Is hot to the touch or discolored
  • Sparked more than a tiny flash, or keeps sparking
  • Got wet from a roof leak, plumbing leak or flooding

See our 24/7 emergency electrician in Clearwater page. Anything else can wait for a scheduled visit at our regular rate.

Permits in Clearwater

Replacing an outlet with a like-for-like device usually doesn’t need a permit. New circuits do, and so do most new outlet locations that extend wiring. Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Clearwater Planning & Development office at 100 S. Myrtle Ave. Unincorporated Clearwater-area addresses go through Pinellas County, and Belleair, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Beach have their own arrangements. We pull the permit when it’s required.

How an outlet repair visit works

  1. Call or book online and tell us what’s happening. Photos help.
  2. We diagnose the circuit, not just the outlet, so the problem doesn’t come back.
  3. We diagnose first and give you the price before we start.
  4. We repair, test and label, and clean up after ourselves.

Warranty and plans

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Members also get 7% off labor and scheduled safety visits, which is useful on the beach where outdoor devices wear out faster.
  • For bigger projects that come out of an outlet call: financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.

Hurricane season notes for this area

October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:

  • Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
  • Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.

Clearwater outlet repair FAQ

My outdoor GFCI near the pool keeps tripping. What’s wrong? On the beach and near the water, it’s usually corrosion or moisture in the box, or a failing device. We find the cause and replace it with a weather-resistant GFCI and an in-use cover. Don’t bypass it.

Can you fix the outlets on my dock? Yes. Dock and boat-lift outlets need GFCI protection and weatherproof equipment. We repair or replace them and check the circuit back to the panel.

Do you handle small jobs like one outlet? Yes. No job too small. Bundling a few small items into one visit makes the most of the trip.

Can you replace two-prong outlets with three-prong ones? Yes, the right way: with a real ground or GFCI protection and the correct labeling.

Do you work in hotels and condos on Clearwater Beach? Yes. We do unit and guest-room repairs and coordinate with managers and associations for anything in common areas.

Do you give prices over the phone? For small repairs, we diagnose first and give you the price before we start. For bigger projects, you get an itemized quote after a site visit.
