The outlet problems we fix most in Largo

Largo has about 82,600 residents, and its median home was built in 1978 (Census ACS 2020–2024). Outlets that have been in service for 40-plus years wear out in predictable ways:

  • Outlets that won’t hold a plug. Worn contacts let plugs sag and arc, which heats the outlet and starts scorch marks.
  • Dead outlets in more than one room. In many 1970s Largo homes, one GFCI in a bathroom, garage or outside protects outlets somewhere else. When it trips, the dead outlets seem random. We trace the circuit and label which GFCI protects what.
  • Outdoor, lanai and pool GFCIs that trip or won’t reset. Florida humidity and sideways summer rain get into outdoor boxes. We replace worn devices with weather-resistant GFCIs and in-use covers.
  • Two-prong and ungrounded outlets. A three-prong outlet with no ground behind it is a common write-up. We either run a proper ground or install GFCI protection with the correct labeling, whichever fits the house and the inspection.
  • Aluminum branch wiring in some 1960s and ’70s homes, where connections at outlets and switches loosen and heat up. If we find it, we’ll explain safe repair options, and rewiring if it’s widespread.
  • Surge damage after a summer storm: dead GFCIs, USB outlets and the electronics plugged into them. We check the circuit and can add whole-house surge protection.

Failed a 4-point inspection for ungrounded outlets?

Florida insurers often require a 4-point inspection on older homes, and ungrounded outlets are one of the items that can mark the electrical section unsatisfactory. We read the report and fix exactly what it flags. On one 1975 Largo home, the report called out ungrounded outlets in the master suite and living room along with a corroded outdoor panel. We corrected the flagged outlets, replaced the outdoor panel, closed up open breaker spaces, and finished in one day instead of replacing every panel in the house. If your report flags the panel too, see panel upgrades in Largo.

Rentals, condos and manufactured homes

  • Landlords and property managers. Almost four in ten Largo homes are rented. We make repairs between tenants or on a service call, and send photos and a written note of what we found and fixed. A Member Care Plan can cover several properties with 7% off labor.
  • Condos and villas. Outlets inside your unit are usually yours. For anything that touches shared walls, common areas or the meter room, we coordinate with your association.
  • Manufactured homes. These have specific code requirements, and community rules may apply. Call us and tell us about it, and we’ll tell you up front what’s needed.

New outlets and circuits for Largo homes

  • Garage outlets for freezers, workbenches, golf carts and tool chargers, with a dedicated circuit for the freezer
  • Lanai, patio and pool-deck outlets with weather-resistant GFCI devices and in-use covers
  • Kitchen and island outlets during remodels, including USB-C
  • TV-wall outlets so cords don’t hang down the wall
  • 240-volt outlets for a dryer, range, shop tools or a plug-in EV charger. See EV charger installation in Largo.
  • Dedicated circuits for mini-splits, a second refrigerator, a hot tub or a home office

If you have a list, like a couple of outlets, a ceiling fan, a light fixture and smoke detectors, we’ll take care of it in one visit.

When an outlet problem is an emergency

Turn off the breaker for that outlet and call us right away, 24/7, if an outlet:

  • Smells like burning or hot plastic
  • Is hot to the touch or discolored
  • Sparked more than a tiny flash, or keeps sparking
  • Got wet from a roof leak, plumbing leak or flooding

For those, see our 24/7 emergency electrician in Largo page. Anything else, like an outlet that simply stopped working, can wait for a scheduled visit at our regular rate.

Permits in Largo

Replacing an outlet with a like-for-like device usually doesn’t need a permit. New circuits do, and so do most new outlet locations that extend wiring. Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Largo Building Services division at 201 Highland Ave. Unincorporated Largo-area addresses, such as Ridgecrest, go through Pinellas County. We pull the permit when it’s required.

How an outlet repair visit works

  1. Call or book online and tell us what’s happening. Photos help.
  2. We diagnose the circuit, not just the outlet, so the problem doesn’t come back.
  3. We diagnose first and give you the price before we start.
  4. We repair, test and label, and clean up after ourselves.

Warranty and plans

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Members also get 7% off labor and scheduled safety visits where we can catch tired outlets before they fail.
  • For bigger projects that come out of an outlet call, like a panel or rewiring job: financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.

Hurricane season notes for this area

October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:

  • Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
  • Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.

Largo outlet repair FAQ

Do you handle small jobs like one outlet? Yes. No job too small. If you have a few small items, bundling them into one visit makes the most of the trip.

Why are outlets dead in different rooms of my Largo home? Usually a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, often in a bathroom, the garage or outside. Try resetting them. If that doesn’t work, or it keeps happening, call us and we’ll trace it.

Can you fix ungrounded outlets flagged on my 4-point inspection? Yes. Send us the report. We’ll correct the flagged outlets with a proper ground or GFCI protection, depending on the house, and give you documentation when we’re done.

Do I need a permit to add an outlet in Largo? Swapping an outlet usually doesn’t. New circuits and most new outlet locations do, from the City of Largo or Pinellas County. We pull it when it’s required.

Do you give prices over the phone? For small repairs, we diagnose first and give you the price before we start. For bigger projects, you get an itemized quote after a site visit.

Can you install a 240-volt outlet for my EV or shop tools? Yes. We check your panel capacity first, then install the circuit and outlet with the permit and the protection the code requires.
