More power for central AC, pools, EV chargers, additions and modern kitchens. We’re a licensed electrical contractor (EC#13014717) based at 6248 Seminole Blvd, so a Seminole service upgrade is close to home for us. We run the load calculation, pull the City of Seminole or Pinellas County permit, and coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Duke Energy.
Call (727) 476-7079 or request a service upgrade assessment. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

Why so many Seminole homes are short on power
Seminole has about 19,400 residents, and its median home was built in 1979 (Census ACS 2020–2024). Most neighborhoods off Park Blvd, Seminole Blvd, 113th Street and Starkey Road were built in the 1970s and early ’80s, and many still have the 100- to 150-amp service they started with. That was enough for a house with one window unit, a gas range and no pool. It isn’t enough for what Seminole homes run now:
- Central AC or a heat pump, often bigger than the original system
- A pool pump and pool heater, sometimes a spa too
- An electric range, dryer and water heater all on the same service
- A Level 2 EV charger, or two
- A converted garage, Florida room or addition with its own mini-split
- A kitchen remodel with an induction range, double ovens and more countertop circuits
When the service is too small, you’ll notice: the main breaker trips, lights dim when the AC starts, the panel is full of tandem breakers, or an inspector or insurer calls the service undersized.
Service upgrade or panel upgrade?
They’re different jobs, and we’ll tell you which one you need:
- A panel upgrade replaces the breaker panel. The power coming into the house stays the same.
- A service upgrade increases the power coming in, usually from 100 or 150 amps to 200 amps, sometimes more for large homes. That typically means a new meter can, service entrance conductors, main disconnect, grounding and bonding, and a new panel, with Duke Energy disconnecting and reconnecting the power.
Load calculation first, no guessing
We don’t sell a service upgrade on a hunch. We add up your existing and planned loads using the National Electrical Code method, then show you the numbers.
- Sometimes the existing service is fine and a new panel solves the problem.
- Sometimes load management avoids the upgrade. A load-managed EV charger, or a SPAN smart panel with SPAN PowerUp™, can keep the home within its service rating by pausing or slowing big loads, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs.
- Sometimes the upgrade is the right call, especially if the panel is also old, full, or a brand like Federal Pacific or Zinsco. Then we’ll explain the scope and put every part on its own line of your quote.

What a Seminole service upgrade involves
- Meter can and service equipment. Many Seminole homes have the meter and panel on an exterior wall. Older meter cans rust in our humid, salty air, especially closer to Boca Ciega Bay and Lake Seminole. We replace them with new, properly rated equipment.
- Overhead or underground service. Some neighborhoods have overhead service from the street or a rear easement; others are underground. Overhead services usually need a new mast and weatherhead. Duke Energy is responsible for the service drop or underground lateral and the meter; we handle everything from the weatherhead or meter can into the house.
- New panel. Good (ABB) or Best (Siemens) options, with every circuit tested and labeled.
- Whole-house surge protection. Required by the electrical code adopted in Florida when a home’s service equipment is replaced, and worth it in a county with this much summer lightning. See whole-house surge protection.
- Grounding and bonding brought up to current code.
Permits: City of Seminole or Pinellas County?
A Seminole mailing address doesn’t always mean you’re inside city limits.
- Inside the City of Seminole: City of Seminole Building Division, 9199 113th St. N. Most residential plan reviews are done in-house. Commercial projects in the city use a private provider for plan review and inspections, and we plan for that on commercial service upgrades.
- Unincorporated Seminole-area addresses, including much of Bardmoor and Bay Pines: Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services.
You can check your tax district on the Pinellas County Property Appraiser site, or just give us the address. We pull the permit either way and schedule the inspection.
Flood-zone note: Some Seminole homes near the bay and the lake are in FEMA flood zones. If a home is being substantially improved or rebuilt after storm damage, the building department may require electrical equipment above a set elevation. We check before we quote so there are no surprises at inspection.
How it works with us
- Site visit and load calculation. We look at the meter, panel, grounding, service drop and what you plan to add.
- Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No service upgrade prices over the phone.
- Permit from the City of Seminole or Pinellas County.
- Duke Energy coordination. We schedule the disconnect and reconnect.
- Installation day. Power is typically off for part of the day. We’ll tell you the plan ahead of time.
- Inspection and reconnect. We meet the inspector, Duke restores power, and you get a labeled circuit directory.
Commercial service upgrades in Seminole
Shops, offices and restaurants along Seminole Blvd and Park Blvd sometimes need more capacity for new equipment, a new tenant or a kitchen. We assess the existing service, coordinate with your engineer or GC if there is one, and handle the private-provider review the City requires for commercial work. See commercial electrical service and build-outs & tenant improvements.
Hurricane season notes for this area
October is still hurricane season on the Gulf coast. For planned electrical work we keep the advice practical:
- Standby generators need a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable-generator interlocks are a different product and are not installed in a SPAN Panel. See generator installation and hookups.
- Whole-house surge protection is required by Florida’s adopted electrical code whenever a home’s service equipment is replaced, and it’s a smart add-on before storm season even when you’re not upgrading. See whole-house surge protection.
- After a storm: do a visual check before restoring power if the house took on water, if you smell burning, or if the meter can or panel was submerged or damaged. Call us for a post-storm inspection rather than flipping the main back on and hoping. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
- Permits: generator hookups, panel and service work still need the correct city or county permit. We pull those when we do the work.
Warranty, financing and scheduling
- 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.
- Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
- Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Seminole service upgrade FAQ
How much does a service upgrade cost in Seminole? It depends on your current service, whether it’s overhead or underground, the meter can and panel, grounding, and whether it’s a City of Seminole or Pinellas County permit. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.
Do I need 200 amps? Many Seminole homes with central AC, a pool and an EV do. Some don’t. We run a load calculation and show you the numbers before recommending anything.
How long will my power be off? Typically part of one day. Duke Energy has to disconnect and reconnect, and we coordinate the timing with them and tell you the plan ahead of time.
Can a SPAN panel avoid a service upgrade? Sometimes. With SPAN PowerUp, the panel can pause or slow big loads like EV charging to stay within your service rating. It requires qualification and enrollment, and results are site-specific.
Who issues the permit for a service upgrade in Seminole? The City of Seminole Building Division inside city limits, or Pinellas County for unincorporated addresses like Bardmoor and Bay Pines. We pull it.
Do you serve Seminole County near Orlando? No. We serve Seminole in Pinellas County and the surrounding Tampa Bay area.
Seminole neighbors: call (727) 476-7079 or request an assessment. We’re right down Seminole Blvd.
^ Requires qualification and enrollment in SPAN PowerUp to avoid a utility service upgrade. Results are site-specific. SPAN® and SPAN PowerUp™ are trademarks of Span.IO, Inc. Keywest Lights & Electric is an independent SPAN Authorized Installer.
