Electrical Service Upgrades in Dunedin, FL

Dunedin packs a lot of housing types into a small city: cottages a few blocks off Main Street, 1970s and ’80s ranch homes up toward Curlew Road, waterfront houses on St. Joseph Sound, and condo buildings near the causeway. When any of them needs more amperage than the original service can deliver, Keywest Lights & Electric does the load calculation, files with the City of Dunedin or Pinellas County, and coordinates the meter pull and reconnect with Duke Energy. Licensed EC#13014717; our shop at 6248 Seminole Blvd is about 13 miles south.

Call (727) 476-7079 or request a service upgrade assessment. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

Dunedin, street by street

The city has about 36,100 residents and a median home built in 1976, and roughly seven in ten homes are owner-occupied (Census ACS 2020–2024). That mix of older houses and long-term owners is exactly where service upgrades come up.

Downtown and the older grid. Small houses near Main Street and the Pinellas Trail often still have a 100-amp service with the meter and panel mounted separately on an exterior wall, sometimes with a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel that has to be replaced anyway.

North of downtown, toward Curlew Road and Alt. 19. Subdivisions from the 1970s and ’80s were wired for one AC unit and a range. Add a heat pump, a pool heater, an EV charger and a kitchen remodel, and the main breaker starts to complain.

On the water. Homes along St. Joseph Sound and near the Dunedin Causeway deal with salt air at the meter can and lugs. Some took saltwater during Hurricane Helene’s surge in 2024.

Condo buildings. The meter center usually belongs to the association, so capacity questions for one unit start with the feeder and a conversation with the manager.

Panel, service, or a smarter panel

  • Same amperage, new panel. If the panel is the problem and the load fits, a panel upgrade in Dunedin is less work and less disruption.
  • More amperage. A service upgrade replaces the meter socket (or adds a meter/main combo), the service-entrance conductors and main disconnect, brings grounding and bonding to current code, and almost always includes a new panel. Duke Energy disconnects at the start and reconnects after inspection.
  • Manage what you have. A load-managed EV charger, or a SPAN smart panel in Dunedin with SPAN PowerUp™, can pause or slow big loads to stay inside the existing rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer.

The load calculation, done the National Electrical Code way and shown to you, decides which of the three makes sense. If an EV is the reason you’re asking, see EV charger installation in Dunedin.

Living near St. Joseph Sound

Waterfront service equipment needs a little more thought:

  • Materials. We select meter sockets, disconnects and fittings that tolerate salt exposure, and we pay close attention to grounding and bonding connections, which corrode first.
  • Elevation. For a substantial improvement or a rebuild after storm damage, the city or county may require the meter, disconnect and panel above a set elevation. We check the flood zone before quoting.
  • Flooded equipment. If your meter or panel sat in water, leave it off. Saltwater-exposed gear normally gets replaced, and Duke may require repairs and an inspection before restoring power. Our Dunedin emergency electrician line is answered 24/7.

Main Street and commercial buildings

Restaurants, breweries, salons and shops in downtown Dunedin tend to grow into their space: another cooler, a bigger kitchen line, a new tenant with different equipment. When that outgrows the building’s service, we assess the existing gear and work with the owner’s engineer or GC on the upgrade and permit. See commercial electrical service.

Who permits it

  • City of Dunedin: the Building Division at 737 Louden Ave issues permits and does inspections. Applications and inspection requests go through the city’s Citizen Self Service portal.
  • Pinellas County: unincorporated parcels next to Dunedin, plus Palm Harbor to the north.
  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We notify Duke before the meter seal is broken; Duke reconnects only after the inspection is approved.

A permitted, inspected service is what insurers and buyers expect to see.

On the quote

  • meter socket or meter/main to Duke and code requirements
  • mast and weatherhead if the drop is overhead
  • new panel, Good (ABB) or Best (Siemens), circuits tested and labeled
  • whole-house surge protection, required under Florida’s adopted electrical code when dwelling service equipment is replaced (read about surge protection)
  • grounding and bonding to current code
  • permit, inspection and Duke disconnect/reconnect

Considering a standby generator too? The transfer switch is simpler to plan while the service is being replaced. See generator installation and hookups.

The sequence

Site visit and load calculation; an itemized quote after the site visit (we don’t quote service upgrades over the phone); permit filed; Duke outage booked; install day, typically with power off for part of one day; inspection and reconnect; labeled circuit directory. Relocations and elevation changes take longer, and we’ll tell you up front.

Warranty, financing, hours

Workmanship warranty: 3 years, or 5 years for Member Care Plan members. Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval, and you can check your options without affecting your credit score. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

We’re a woman-owned, family-run electrical contractor in business since 2010, a Home Depot preferred contractor, bondable to $1M with projects up to $2M. Solar and battery systems are installed by our licensed partner installers; we handle the electrical work and manage the project.

Dunedin service upgrade FAQ

What does a service upgrade cost in Dunedin? It depends on the existing service, where the meter is, overhead or underground service, any flood-zone elevation rules, and the panel. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.

Does every house need 200 amps? No. Some Dunedin homes with central AC, a pool and an EV do; others are fine with a smaller step up. The load calculation settles it.

Can SPAN help me avoid an upgrade? Sometimes. SPAN PowerUp can pause or slow big loads like EV charging to stay within the service rating. It requires qualification and enrollment, and results are site-specific.

Can my condo unit get more capacity? Call and describe the building. The meter center belongs to the association, so we review the feeder and meter center with the manager and tell you plainly what’s involved.

How long is the power out? Usually part of a day for a straightforward job, longer for relocations or elevation work.

Who issues the permit? The City of Dunedin inside city limits; Pinellas County for unincorporated addresses and Palm Harbor. We pull it either way.
