200 amp electrical service upgrade by Keywest Lights & Electric: new meter can and disconnect on a stucco wall
A 200 amp service upgrade we did in the Tampa Bay area: new meter can and disconnect.

Why Safety Harbor homes run short on power

Safety Harbor has about 17,000 residents, and its median home was built in 1984 (Census ACS 2020–2024). Most homes are owner-occupied, and many owners have been there long enough to add a pool, a second AC or a remodel. What we find at the meter depends on the part of town:

  • Older cottages and mid-century homes near downtown and Main Street. Original 100- to 150-amp services, separate meters and panels, and some Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels that often need replacing at the same time.
  • 1980s–90s subdivisions off McMullen-Booth Road. The most common Safety Harbor service-upgrade call: an owner who wants room for an EV charger, a pool heater or a kitchen remodel and has run out of capacity on the original service.
  • Homes near Old Tampa Bay and Bayshore Boulevard. Salt air corrodes meter cans and lugs faster than inland. Low-lying homes near the bay also face storm-surge and flood-zone elevation rules.

Signs your service can’t keep up: the main breaker trips, lights dim when the AC starts, the panel is full of doubled-up breakers, or an insurer, inspector or buyer flags the service.

Service upgrade or panel upgrade?

  • A panel upgrade replaces the breaker panel. The power coming in stays the same.
  • A service upgrade increases the incoming power. That usually means a new meter can or meter/main combo, service entrance conductors, a main disconnect, grounding and bonding, and a new panel, with the utility disconnecting and reconnecting.

Load calculation first

We add up your existing and planned loads using the National Electrical Code method and show you the result.

  • Sometimes a new panel on the existing service is enough.
  • Sometimes load management avoids the upgrade. A load-managed EV charger, or a SPAN smart panel with SPAN PowerUp™, can pause or slow big loads to keep the home within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs.
  • Sometimes the upgrade is the right call. Then every part of the job goes on its own line of your quote.

Bayfront, HOA and flood-zone notes

  • Corrosion-aware equipment near Old Tampa Bay and Bayshore.
  • Elevation rules. If a home is being substantially improved or rebuilt after storm damage, Pinellas County may require the meter, disconnect and panel above a set elevation. We check before we quote.
  • Flooded service equipment. If your meter or panel was under water, leave the power off. Saltwater-exposed equipment usually has to be replaced, and the utility may require repairs and an inspection before reconnecting. Call our 24/7 emergency line for Safety Harbor.
  • Townhomes and HOAs. Exterior equipment changes may need architectural approval. We provide the specs your board usually asks for and wait for written approval before we start.

What’s included

  • New meter can or meter/main combo as required
  • New mast and weatherhead for overhead services
  • New panel, Good (ABB) or Best (Siemens) options, with every circuit tested and labeled
  • Whole-house surge protection, required by the electrical code adopted in Florida when a home’s service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.
  • Grounding and bonding brought up to current code
  • Permit, inspection and utility coordination

Permits in Safety Harbor: Pinellas County

Under the city’s interlocal agreement with Pinellas County (effective May 1, 2021), electrical permits for private property are filed directly with Pinellas County Building Services, 440 Court St., Clearwater, through the county’s online Access Portal. Inspections are scheduled with the county too. The City of Safety Harbor still reviews some other permit types for its own codes, so we’ll confirm if your project needs anything from the city.

  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida serves most of Safety Harbor. Check your bill, and we’ll schedule the disconnect and reconnect with your utility when the meter has to be pulled.

A service upgrade always needs a permit. Unpermitted service work can cause trouble with insurance claims and when you sell.

How it works with us

  1. Site visit and load calculation: meter, panel, service drop, grounding and what you plan to add.
  2. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No service upgrade prices over the phone.
  3. Permit from Pinellas County (and any city paperwork if needed).
  4. Utility coordination for the disconnect and reconnect.
  5. Installation day. Power is typically off for part of the day; relocations and elevation changes can take longer.
  6. Inspection and reconnect. We meet the inspector, the utility restores power, and you get a labeled circuit directory.

Main Street commercial service upgrades

Restaurants, cafés, shops and offices downtown sometimes need more capacity for new equipment, EV charging or a new tenant. We assess the existing service, coordinate with your engineer or GC, and handle permitting. We can schedule shutdowns for off-hours. See commercial electrical service.

Hurricane season notes for this area

Gulf coast storm season runs through November. For planned electrical work we keep recommendations practical:

  • Generator hookups need a listed transfer switch or interlock – never a back-feed cord. See generator installation.
  • Whole-house surge protection belongs at the panel and is required when service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.
  • After flooding or a strike: leave damaged panels and wet equipment off until inspected. Emergency calls are answered 24/7; we do not promise a response time.
  • Permits still apply for generator, panel and service work – we pull the correct city or county permit with the job.

Warranty, financing and scheduling

  • 3-year workmanship warranty, extended to 5 years for Member Care Plan members.
  • Financing available through Acorn Finance, subject to credit approval. Check your options without affecting your credit score. Ask us and we’ll include the financing link with your itemized quote.
  • Hours: office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, and 24/7 emergency calls.

Safety Harbor service upgrade FAQ

How much does a service upgrade cost in Safety Harbor? It depends on your current service, the meter location, overhead or underground service, any flood-zone elevation requirements, and the panel. We give you an itemized quote after a site visit.

Do I need 200 amps? Not always. Many Safety Harbor homes with central AC, a pool and an EV do; others are well served by a smaller upgrade. The load calculation decides.

Can a SPAN panel avoid a service upgrade? Sometimes. With SPAN PowerUp, the panel can pause or slow big loads like EV charging to stay within your service rating. It requires qualification and enrollment, and results are site-specific.

Who issues the permit for a service upgrade in Safety Harbor? Pinellas County Building Services. Electrical permits for private property in Safety Harbor are filed directly with the county. We pull it and schedule the inspection.

How long will my power be off? Typically part of one day for a straightforward upgrade. Relocations and elevation changes take longer, and we’ll tell you the plan ahead of time.

My HOA has rules about exterior equipment. Can you work with that? Yes. We’ll plan a route that meets them, give you the details your board usually asks for, and wait for written approval before we start.
