Seminole homes and what’s plugged in
Seminole’s median home was built in 1979, and about 92% of homes heat with electricity (Census ACS 2020–2024). In practice, that means heat pumps, air handlers, electric water heaters and, in many homes, pool equipment, all hardwired and all with electronic controls that a plug-in strip can’t protect.
When it is required
Under NEC 2020 as adopted in Florida, rule 230.67 calls for a Type 1 or 2 device whenever a home service is installed or swapped.
Where it goes and what it protects
The device installs in or beside the panel and connects to a dedicated breaker or the main lugs. In most Seminole homes the panel is on an exterior wall or in the garage, and installation does not require replacing the panel. It protects everything on that service, including hardwired equipment such as air handlers, heat pumps, well and pool pumps, garage door openers and smart thermostats, which plug-in strips can’t cover.
Lightning and grid switching
The National Weather Service notes that Central Florida has lightning nearly every day in the warm season. Not every surge is lightning, though; restoring power after an outage and large motors cycling also create spikes. A surge protector at the panel handles both kinds.
What installation looks like
We turn off the power, mount the device in a knockout on or beside the panel, connect it to a dedicated breaker or the main lugs with short, straight leads, and restore power. Short leads matter: the device works best close to the panel. Most devices have indicator lights that show whether protection is active.
When to replace it
Surge protectors wear with each event they absorb. Many show their status with lights; when protection is lost, replace the device. We also check it during Member Care Plan visits.
Solar, batteries and EV chargers
Homes with an EV charger, solar inverter or battery have more sensitive electronics tied to the panel. A surge device at the service adds a layer of protection for that equipment.
Pairing it with other work
If you’re adding an EV charger, a generator interlock or a new panel, add surge protection on the same visit. It’s one trip into the panel instead of two.
Pool equipment and HVAC
Variable-speed pool pumps, heat pumps and air handlers all have electronic boards that are expensive to replace and often hard to source after a storm. Panel-level protection is the only practical way to cover them, since they’re hardwired.

Seminole surge protection FAQ
How close are you? We’re in Seminole, at 6248 Seminole Blvd.
Does surge protection stop lightning damage? It reduces damage from surges on the lines. A direct strike is a different problem.
Do I still need surge strips? Yes, for sensitive electronics. The panel device and strips work together.
Is it required on my existing home? Only when the service is new or replaced, under the 2020 NEC. Otherwise it’s optional.
Do you pull a permit? Yes, when one is required.
Will it protect my pool pump? Yes, since it covers hardwired equipment on the service.
Can you add it to my generator hookup? Yes, it’s a common pairing.
Seminole homes
Half of Seminole’s housing predates 1979, and 54.1% is older than 1980; electric heat runs in roughly 92% of homes. Owners hold 72.7% of households, and mobile or manufactured units are 13.0% of housing (Census survey; B25024).
Seminole storm season and a plan for the panel
Seminole sits between the Intracoastal and mid-county, and parts of it fall in evacuation zones. Check your address with Pinellas County Know Your Zone before each season. Lightning is the more frequent problem: the National Weather Service notes that Central Florida is the most active lightning area in the country, with storms nearly every day from mid-May to mid-October. If a storm already damaged appliances, have the panel and grounding looked at before you replace the electronics. A whole-house device protects new equipment only when the grounding behind it is sound.
About 54.1% of Seminole homes predate 1980 (ACS table B25034). Older homes often have grounding that was installed before current rules. We test and photograph what we find so you have a record, and we can install a listed surge device at the panel once the grounding is sound.
