We’re about a mile from the middle of Bay Pines, so this is about as close to home as our work gets. It’s a place with deep history: the Bay Pines archaeological site has been on the National Register since 1983. The houses are newer than that, but not by much in modern terms. The Census counts 1,643 housing units in Bay Pines. Our shop at 6248 Seminole Blvd is about 1.0 miles away in a straight line.

Old wiring, new electronics
A house built in the 1950s or 1970s now runs a variable-speed air handler, a smart thermostat, a refrigerator with a control board, and a wall of chargers. Those circuit boards may be more sensitive than the simpler appliances they replaced, and a spike from a nearby lightning strike or a utility switching event can take out several at once.
A whole-house surge protective device mounted at the panel or meter clamps those spikes before they spread through the branch circuits. It works best as the first layer, with plug-in protectors on TVs, computers and networking gear as a second.
Grounding is half the job
In a house of this age, the grounding may have corroded, been disconnected during earlier work, or never met today’s standards. We don’t assume either way; we test it. A surge device needs a solid path to earth to do anything useful, so we check and correct the grounding and bonding as part of the install.
Planning a new panel instead? Then there’s nothing extra to add: a surge protector is part of every panel we install.
Code is moving, too
The state’s 9th Edition building code, which brings in the NEC’s 2023 edition, starts applying at the close of 2026. If you’re planning panel or service work around that date, we’ll explain which surge requirements apply to your project.
We are a woman-owned shop, Keywest Lights & Electric, and our Florida license number is EC13014717. Every surge device we put in is backed by a 2-year labor guarantee; households enrolled in Member Care get 5 years.
Ring us at (727) 476-7079 and ask for a surge check.
