Electrical Panel Upgrades in Kenneth City, FL

Panel, breaker box and fuse box replacement for Kenneth City’s mid-century block homes and the shops along 54th Avenue North. Most homes here were built in the late 1950s and ’60s, so the panel is often original or close to it, sometimes a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, and usually on a 100-amp service that now carries central AC and a modern kitchen. We pull the Pinellas County permit Kenneth City uses, coordinate with Duke Energy, and give you an itemized quote after a site visit. Licensed (EC#13014717), about 5½ miles away in Seminole.

Call (727) 476-7079 or request a panel visit. Office 7 AM–5 PM, weekend service, 24/7 emergency calls.

A town built almost all at once

Kenneth City was incorporated on April 30, 1957, on what had been about 340 acres of pasture between St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park. Developer Sidney Colen named it after his son, and most of the town’s single-family homes went up over the next decade or so. Today it has about 5,000 residents, a median home built in 1964, and roughly eight in ten homes are owner-occupied (Census ACS 2020–2024).

When a whole town is built in one era, the electrical systems age together. Here’s what we find most often:

  • Panels that are 55 to 65 years old, with worn breakers, loose or heat-darkened connections, and labels nobody can read.
  • Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, the two brands most likely to show up in a house built in Kenneth City’s first decade. Their breakers have a long record of problems, and a 4-point inspector will almost always call them out. More on FPE & Zinsco →
  • Fuse boxes and fuse-protected subpanels still hanging on in a few homes, often next to a newer breaker panel that was added later.
  • 100-amp services that were plenty in 1962 but are tight once a home has central AC, an electric range, a dryer, a pool pump and maybe an EV.
  • Two-prong outlets and ungrounded circuits throughout, and in some late-’60s homes, aluminum branch wiring. Rewiring →

A Kenneth City-area panel replacement

On a St. Petersburg home just south of Kenneth City, the old panel’s label had faded and peeled until no circuit could be identified, a common sight in houses this age. We replaced it with a new panel and meter, left the service disconnect clearly marked, and labeled every circuit on a printed directory. See the before and after →

How to tell it’s time

  1. Your panel is Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or the brand isn’t even legible anymore
  2. Breakers trip when the AC and dryer run together
  3. A breaker or the panel cover feels warm, or you hear buzzing
  4. You still have fuses anywhere in the house
  5. The lights dim when the AC compressor starts
  6. Your insurer or a home inspector has written it up
  7. You’re adding central AC, a heat pump, an addition or an EV

If you smell something burning at the panel, turn off the main breaker if it’s safe and call us. We take emergency calls 24/7. See our emergency electrician service.

New panel, or a 200-amp service upgrade too?

In Kenneth City, these two decisions often go together. A new panel replaces the box and breakers; it doesn’t add capacity. If the home is on 100 amps and you’re adding load, we run a load calculation first:

  • The load fits. A new 100- or 125-amp-rated panel with modern breakers, AFCI/GFCI where required, and surge protection may be all you need.
  • The load doesn’t fit. A service upgrade to 200 amps with a new meter base, coordinated with Duke Energy, goes on its own line of the quote. It’s a common Kenneth City project.

There’s a third route for owners planning ahead. Instead of a standard breaker panel, a SPAN smart panel gives you an app view of every circuit and, if a battery is added later, lets you choose what runs during an outage. Its SPAN PowerUp™ feature can throttle EV charging so a 100-amp or 150-amp home stays within its service rating, which can sometimes avoid a utility service upgrade.^ We’re a SPAN Authorized Installer with 20 SPAN installs; our nearest area page is SPAN smart panels in Pinellas Park. Solar and batteries are installed by our licensed partner installers; we handle the electrical work and manage the project.

Selling, insuring or inheriting a Kenneth City home

With so many long-time owners, a lot of our Kenneth City calls come when a home changes hands or an insurance renewal arrives. We can:

  • Read the 4-point report with you and fix exactly what it flags, sometimes without replacing everything. On one Largo home, we cleared the 4-point items in a day instead of replacing every panel in the house. Read the 4-point case study →
  • Work around a closing date, with the permit and final inspection documented for the buyer, lender or insurer.
  • Look past the panel at grounding, the meter base and the service drop attachment, since those are often as old as the panel.

Permits: town zoning, county building

Kenneth City doesn’t run its own building department. Under an interlocal agreement, Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services issues building permits and does inspections in town, while Kenneth City handles zoning. Under the published permit list, electrical work on private property is a county-only permit, so a panel replacement or service upgrade goes straight to the county through its online Access Portal (the county office is at 440 Court St., Clearwater). Some other project types, including generators and solar, start at Town Hall (6000 54th Ave. N) for a pre-approval before the county reviews them. We handle whichever path your job needs.

  • Utility: Duke Energy Florida. We schedule the disconnect and reconnect when the meter has to be pulled.

What a Kenneth City panel upgrade includes

  1. Site visit. Panel, meter, grounding and bonding, wiring type at the panel, and what you plan to add.
  2. Itemized quote after the site visit. Every part of the job on its own line. No panel prices over the phone.
  3. Permit and Duke Energy coordination.
  4. Install day. Most home panel replacements are done in a day, with the power off for part of it; a service upgrade can take longer. Every circuit is tested and labeled.
  5. Whole-house surge protection at the panel, which the electrical code adopted in Florida requires when a home’s service equipment is replaced. See whole-house surge protection.
  6. County inspection. We schedule it and meet the inspector.

Kenneth City panel upgrade FAQ

How much does a panel upgrade cost in Kenneth City? It depends on the panel, whether the service needs to go to 200 amps, the condition of the meter base and grounding, and any code corrections. You get an itemized quote after a site visit.

Who issues electrical permits in Kenneth City? Pinellas County Building & Development Review Services, under the town’s interlocal agreement. Electrical work on private property is a county-only permit. We pull it.

My 1960s house has 100 amps. Do I need 200? Not always. A load calculation tells you. If you’re adding central AC, a heat pump or an EV, 200 amps is often the right call.

My insurer flagged my Federal Pacific panel. What now? Send us the inspection report. We’ll schedule a site visit, give you an itemized quote, and after the final inspection provide the documents your insurer asks for.

Can you fix my two-prong outlets while you’re there? Yes. We can add a ground where practical or install GFCI protection, labeled as the code allows, and quote it on its own line.

Do you also work in Pinellas Park and Lealman? Yes. See panel upgrades in Pinellas Park and panel upgrades in Lealman.
