Before
AfterA St. Petersburg waterfront job: weathered dock and boat-lift wiring (left), new weatherproof boxes and conduit (right).
Safety first: If you see smoke or flames, or someone has been shocked, call 911 first. If it’s safe, turn off the main breaker or pull the main fuses. Stay away from downed lines and from anything electrical that’s wet. Then call us.
Electrical emergencies we handle in Gulfport
Call right away, day or night, for:
- A burning or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch, light or the panel
- Sparks, buzzing or crackling from an outlet, switch, fuse box or breaker
- A hot outlet, switch plate, fuse or breaker
- Partial power loss or lights that dim badly when the AC starts, which often points to a failing connection at the meter or main
- A fuse that blows or a breaker that trips immediately every time
- Water in or near the panel, meter or outlets from a storm, roof leak or flooding
- Storm or tree damage to the service mast, weatherhead, meter can or outside wiring
- Dock or boat-lift power that’s sparking, tripping or has been under water
- A business that can’t wait: a walk-in cooler, a kitchen line, or a dining room with no lights
Is it just you? If the whole street is dark, it’s probably a utility outage. Report it to Duke Energy through the Duke Energy app or duke-energy.com. If it’s only your home or building, or only part of it, call us.
Older homes: what usually fails
Gulfport has about 11,700 residents, and its median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS 2020–2024), the oldest of any city on our main service list. Many homes near Boca Ciega Bay are 1920s–50s cottages and bungalows, renovated in pieces. Emergencies there usually trace back to:
- Fuse boxes and obsolete panels, including Federal Pacific and Zinsco units with well-documented breaker concerns
- Mixed wiring generations: original circuits, remodel-era cable, and sometimes knob-and-tube or ungrounded runs with brittle insulation
- Small services straining under central AC and modern appliances
- Corroded exterior panels and meter cans from salt air near the bay
After we fix the emergency, we’ll tell you if a panel upgrade in Gulfport or rewiring should be on your list, and give you an itemized quote later. No pressure in the middle of the night.
Docks, boat lifts and salt air
Salt air is hard on dock wiring, and a failing dock circuit near water is dangerous. On one St. Petersburg waterfront property, the boxes and wiring on the piling that served the boat lift were weathered, with an open box and loose runs. We installed a new dock panel, mounted weatherproof boxes and ran the wiring in conduit. See the dock before and after → If your dock power is sparking, tripping or was submerged, shut it off at the breaker, stay off the dock, and call us.
Waterfront district restaurants and shops
The restaurants, bars and shops along Beach Boulevard and Shore Boulevard can’t afford a dead circuit on a busy night. We handle:
- Tripped or failed equipment circuits on coolers, fryers, ovens and ice machines
- Overheating panels and subpanels
- Lighting failures in dining rooms, kitchens, patios and signage
- Storm and flood damage to service equipment
We make it safe, get you running where we can, and quote any bigger repair separately. See commercial electrical service.
Storms and flooding in Gulfport
Parts of Gulfport took water in the 2024 hurricanes, so this matters here:
- Don’t re-energize anything that’s been under water. Panels, outlets and breakers exposed to floodwater, especially saltwater, usually have to be replaced. Duke Energy may require repairs and an inspection before reconnecting.
- Substantial damage. If a home is being substantially repaired after a storm, the City of Gulfport may require electrical equipment above a set elevation. We check before we quote the permanent repair.
- Torn-off service mast or meter can? Duke Energy is generally responsible for the service drop and meter. The owner is responsible for the mast, weatherhead, meter can and everything inside. We repair your side, pull the permit, and Duke reconnects.
- Generator safety. Never back-feed a building through a dryer outlet. It can electrocute utility crews and neighbors. See generator installation and hookups.
- Lightning and surge damage. We troubleshoot it and can add whole-house surge protection.
What happens when you call
- We answer and ask a few questions: what you see, smell or hear, and whether anyone is in danger. We’ll tell you how to stay safe and give you an honest arrival estimate.
- We tell you the after-hours rate before we dispatch. No surprises.
- We find the cause, make it safe, and fix what can be fixed on the spot. When a permit is needed, we file it with the City of Gulfport Building Department at 5330 23rd Ave S.
- Bigger repairs get an itemized quote. If the fix is a panel, service or rewiring job, we make it safe now and quote the rest after the site visit.
Hours: emergency calls 24/7. Office 7 AM–5 PM, with weekend service for non-emergency work.
Not an emergency? We fix those too
A dead outlet, an occasional flicker, or a GFCI that trips now and then can usually wait for a scheduled visit at our regular rate. Call and describe it, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s urgent. See outlet repair and installation.
Storm-season electrical prep
Pinellas still sees tropical weather into fall. Before you book planned work, a few accurate notes:
- Standby generators connect through a listed transfer switch ahead of the panel. Portable units need a listed interlock or inlet – not a dryer outlet.
- Panel-mounted surge protection protects HVAC and electronics from utility spikes; Florida’s code requires it when service equipment is replaced. Details: whole-house surge protection.
- If water reached the meter can or panel, arrange an inspection before restoring power. We answer emergency calls around the clock without promising arrival windows.
- Generator and service upgrades need permits – see also generator installation and hookups.
Warranty, membership and financing
