Census data puts the median home in St. Petersburg at 1969 and in Gulfport at 1963, and many neighborhoods are much older. Wiring from those eras wasn’t designed for modern loads, and some types carry real risks.

Wiring we fix

• Aluminum branch-circuit wiring (common in homes built roughly 1965–1973). Connections can loosen and overheat. Options include approved remediation connectors at each connection point (such as COPALUM or AlumiConn) or rewiring.
• Knob-and-tube (pre-1950s). No ground, insulation that’s brittle with age. Citizens’ 4-point inspection form asks whether active knob-and-tube is present.
• Cloth-insulated and early ungrounded wiring. Two-prong outlets, no equipment ground.
• DIY and amateur additions. Buried splices, undersized wire, missing boxes.

Full or phased

A full rewire can be done room by room over a few days, working through attics, crawl spaces and existing openings to keep wall repairs to a minimum. If the budget calls for it, we’ll prioritize the highest-risk circuits (kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms) and phase the rest. Rewiring pairs well with a panel replacement and GFCI/AFCI protection.

Signs your home may need rewiring

Warning signs include two-prong ungrounded outlets, cloth-insulated or aluminum branch wiring, outlets or switches that feel warm, frequent flicker or tripping, and insurance companies asking about the wiring. Homes built before the 1970s in Pinellas may have at least one of these. We inspect first and tell you whether you need a full rewire or a few targeted circuits.

Signs older wiring may need replacing

Common reasons to consider rewiring include cloth-insulated or ungrounded wiring, knob-and-tube wiring, aluminum branch circuits with signs of overheating at outlets or switches, frequent breaker trips, warm cover plates and outlets that no longer hold a plug.

Living at home during a rewire

Most families stay put. Before we start, we agree on a written room-by-room plan: which circuits go dark each day, which rooms stay usable, and where we expect to open walls. We keep the kitchen, one bathroom and the bedrooms powered while other areas are worked, and we make every opening safe before we leave for the day.

1. We fish new copper through attic and wall cavities where we can, so most openings are small and placed at boxes and junctions.
2. We patch the openings we make. Texture and paint are a separate step, and we tell you up front who handles them.
3. Each phase gets its own inspection, so a large job can be spread over weeks if that suits your budget.

Rewiring for insurance and resale

Florida 4-point inspections record the wiring type, and many carriers question single-strand aluminum branch wiring, cloth-insulated cable and active knob-and-tube. A permitted rewire with a final inspection gives your agent and a future buyer a clean record. Can we stay in the house while it is rewired? Yes, in most cases. We phase the work so key rooms keep power and give you a daily plan of which circuits will be off.

Will you have to tear open my walls? Not wholesale. We route wire through existing cavities where possible, and the openings we do make are small and patched. Paint and texture are a separate step.

Does a rewire help with homeowners insurance? It can remove the wiring items a 4-point report flags. Your insurer makes the final call, so ask your agent what documentation they want.

Is aluminum wiring dangerous? Single-strand aluminum branch wiring, used in some homes in the 1960s and 1970s, can loosen and overheat at connections. Approved repair methods exist, such as connectors rated for aluminum-to-copper, or the circuits can be replaced.

Do I need to rewire the whole house at once? Not always. Rewiring can be done in phases, for example starting with the circuits in the worst condition or those in rooms being remodeled. Each phase needs a permit and inspection.

How do I know if I have aluminum wiring? Look at the cable jacket in the attic or at the panel for “AL” or “ALUMINUM,” or check the silver-colored conductors at the breakers. Don’t open outlets or the panel yourself. We’ll check it safely.

Do I have to move out during a rewire? In most cases, no. We work in sections and restore power at the end of each day where possible.

Will rewiring help with insurance? Insurers commonly ask about wiring type during 4-point inspections. Replacing knob-and-tube or remediating aluminum wiring can resolve those questions. Check with your agent.
