According to Hillsborough’s yearly disaster guide, a generator should be connected to household wiring only by a licensed electrician, and it should never operate inside a house or garage. The county spans 1,072 square miles, 909 of them unincorporated. Census estimates count 630,692 homes countywide, built at a 1991 median.

Two safe connection methods
With an interlock, a sliding plate on the panel cover lets the generator breaker close only when the main is off; it must be listed for that panel model. A manual transfer switch is a separate small panel serving a fixed group of circuits, useful when no listed interlock fits.
The inlet outside
A weather-rated inlet goes on the exterior wall, sized to your generator’s receptacle, placed so the unit can sit outdoors, well clear of doors, windows and vents.
Permits and jurisdiction
These installs are permitted and inspected; we file the paperwork. Whether your address is in a city or unincorporated Hillsborough, confirm the requirements with that city or the county.
